It seems that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has not conjured up a way to get the Scarlet Witch back on screen in the next two Avengers films.

This is according to star Elizabeth Olsen herself, who was asked by The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview if directors Joe and Anthony Russo “are going to be extending [her] stay” in London, where the forthcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are due to shoot back-to-back soon.

“No, I’m back [in the States],” she told the outlet. “I just finished [Panic Carefully]. I’m moving on to filming a pilot for FX [called Seven Sisters].”

Reps for Marvel and reps for Olsen did not immediately return Entertainment Weekly‘s request for additional comment on Monday.

To date, Olsen has played the character of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch in six MCU films, beginning with 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She was last seen in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where she seemingly sacrificed herself in order to destroy the Darkhold and Mount Wundagore in all universes. Olsen also played the character in the Disney+ series WandaVision in 2021.

Though it would appear that Olsen has confirmed her absence from the upcoming Doomsday and Secret Wars, which are due to be released in theaters in 2026 and 2027, respectively, it’s worth noting that Marvel movies are notoriously secretive affairs, and many actors have been caught lying about their involvement in the past.

Most recently, this included The Acolyte star Dafne Keen. One week out from MCU film Deadpool & Wolverine hitting theaters last summer, Disney and Marvel dropped a teaser for the film that confirmed her Logan character, Laura, a.k.a. X-23, had a cameo in the new film.

Entertainment Weekly spoke with Keen about her deception at the time. “I had a great time keeping it secret. I had to do a bunch of press for a job that I just finished,” Keen said, referring to her role as the Jedi Jecki on The Acolyte. “I got asked in every interview, and I just got to lie, which was really funny.”

She credited fellow MCU liar Andrew Garfield, who had to do something similar to hide his surprise role as Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. “All the inspo comes from Andrew Garfield,” Keen admitted. “He is the master at this.”

Who is or isn’t returning to star in the next Avengers film has become something of a running gag in recent months. First, Benedict Cumberbatch said he won’t return as Doctor Strange, only to then immediately walk those comments back. Then, weeks after some of the Hollywood trades reported Chris Evans would be making his Marvel return in Doomsday, the actor himself denied the chatter, claiming he is “happily retired.”

At the very least, we know Robert Downey Jr. will return to Marvel to now star as the villain of Doomsday, Victor von Doom, and we’ll just have to wait to find out who else is telling the truth when the film hits theaters on May 1, 2026.
