Ellen Pompeo turned an answer to a question about her new TV series Good American Family into a critique of Donald Trump on Monday’s episode of The View.

The 55-year-old appeared on the talk show to promote her new Hulu project, which dramatizes the real-life case of Natalia Grace, a woman with a rare form of dwarfism who was adopted and later abandoned by an American family after they claimed she was lying about her age.

In response to cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin‘s question about Grace’s true identity and what Pompeo hopes audiences take away from the story, the Grey’s Anatomy actress launched into a critique of Trump amid the controversial president’s administration move to deport many immigrants from the country.

“I hope they take away that we should rush to judgment a little less. I hope they look at themselves. We all should ask ourselves, why do we look at something and, at face value, make a judgment about it?” Pompeo said. “I think we do that as human beings, and I think we all need a lot more empathy right now. I hope we take that away.”

She paused before referencing Trump’s May 2024 34-count conviction after his hush-money trial, “I mean, why are old white men the only ones who are allowed to be felons? No one else can stay in this country if they’re a felon, but somehow…,” trailing off as Republican panelist Ana Navarro referenced Trump as she quipped, “He’s not even that white. Have you seen the amount of makeup he wears?”

Pompeo’s comment came amid mass deportations and reports Monday that Trump’s team had transferred hundreds of immigrants to El Salvador after a federal judge “issued an order temporarily barring the deportations under an 18th century wartime declaration targeting Venezuelan gang members,” according to the Associated Press.

Per the AP, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to the news in a statement, saying, “The administration did not ‘refuse to comply’ with a court order. The order, which had no lawful basis, was issued after terrorist TdA aliens had already been removed from U.S. territory.”

Cohosts (both current and former) of The View have long criticized Trump and his administration, with the lineup regularly slamming his policies since he took office in January. Former View moderator Rosie O’Donnell even revealed in a recent TikTok video that she moved abroad to Ireland with her 12-year-old, Clay, to avoid Trump’s policies.

The View airs weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. PT on ABC.
