Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón is apologizing for a number of past racist and Islamophobic social media posts she made that recently resurfaced on X.

“I want to acknowledge the conversation around my past social media posts that have caused hurt,” the Spanish actress told The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. “As someone in a marginalized community, I know this suffering all too well and I am deeply sorry to those I have caused pain. All my life I have fought for a better world. I believe light will always triumph over darkness.”

Reps for Gascón did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

The writer Sarah Hagi posted a thread to X the morning of Jan. 30 containing 12 examples of past posts by Gascón that contained inflammatory language, Islamophobic epithets, and racist suggestions. One from 2016 described Islam as a “hotbed of infection for humanity,” and another from 2021 read, “How many more times will history have to expel the Moors from Spain,” according to translations from Google.

While Hagi noted that Gascón “still has these tweets up,” many of the posts had been deleted by midday.

Gascón became the first openly trans performer to be nominated for an acting Oscar earlier this month when she was honored with a Best Actress nod for her performance in Jacques Audiard’s trans cartel musical.

While her apology makes specific reference to the resurfaced posts, it isn’t the only scandal the actress is facing. Speculation has been brewing that Gascón may have violated Oscars campaign rules with recent comments made about fellow Best Actress nominee Fernanda Torres.

Gascón called the I’m Still Here star a “wonderful woman” who “deserves all the recognition in this world” in a Jan. 21 interview with the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, but also claimed that she has seen “many people who work in Fernanda Torres’ environment who speak badly of me and Emilia Pérez,” according to an independent translation by EW.

The actress already addressed those comments in a statement provided to EW by Emilia Pérez distributor Netflix, calling herself “an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres” and saying she was instead “referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience.”

Several X users have pointed out that Gascón was critical of Oscars themselves too in past posts, noting a post about the 2021 ceremony in which the actress claimed she “didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M.” Several Black and Korean actors took home top prizes that night, including Daniel Kaluuya, who was honored for his Judas and the Black Messiah performance, and Youn Yuh-jung, who won for her work in Minari.

Gascón’s most recent post on X is an image featuring two of her own headshots photoshopped over a row of green aliens. According to a translation from Google, the text on the image reads, “Karla Sofía Gascón is not an extraterrestrial,” and casts her as the human representative of beings from Mars who “assures that there is no water on Mars and that the atmosphere is unbreathable.”

The caption reads, “New ideas for haters… That’s what they’re missing.”
