Mobile Suit Gundam and Neon Genesis Evangelion are the two biggest names in mecha anime. Now, the current iteration of the former is being helmed by the Evangelion creator, and he aims to freshen things up for the venerable franchise.
In a recent social media post, he spoke about his goals for the new series and its place in the Gundam property. This means doing new things while still being familiar — something that he assures fans has been achieved through the anime’s prequel movie. Soon set to be released in the U.S., the film will hopefully surprise fans as much as Hideaki Anno promises.

Evangelion’s Hideaki Anno Promises Quality & Excitement in New Gundam GQuuuuuuX Anime
In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Khara shared a message from studio co-founder Hideaki Anno, the creator behind the Evangelion franchise and the new Gundam anime, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. He specifically spoke to Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, a compilation prequel movie comprising the anime’s first three episodes. The message notes the high production values of the series overall, speaking to the “surprising” energy and anticipation building in those working on the anime. He also compared Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX to a “separate” building from the “main building” of the Gundam franchise, reflecting more than just its status as an anime in a separate continuity. The goal was to create something that a wider range of viewers can enjoy, expanding beyond the scope of the classic Universal Century style of Gundam anime.
To this end, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX notably has a female protagonist, continuing in the footsteps of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury (which gained new fans for the franchise). The release of the movie is being made into a major event, especially in Japan. Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning- will receive a 4DX release in Japan, featuring all manner of environmental elements such as smoke. There will also be screenings in the U.S. at the end of February, much as Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom — the franchise’s most financially successful movie to date — had in 2024. Mobile Suit Gundam continues to be one of the biggest anime franchises around the world, with the 2020s seeing something of an international revival for the brand. Works such as Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX go a long way in bringing in new fans with different types of storytelling, but per Anno, it’s still within the same wheelhouse.
