Family Ties star Brian Bonsall relived a dark chapter of his past for “Child Stars Gone Violent,” the latest installment of Investigation Discovery’s new docuseries, Hollywood Demons, which premieres on Monday.
Bonsall was first cast on the hit NBC sitcom when he was only four years old, appearing as the youngest member of the Keaton clan alongside Michael J. Fox from 1986-1989. He explained that he began to use and then abuse drugs and alcohol after his mother uprooted him from Hollywood for Colorado in the mid-’90s.
“In my 20s, I was out, and met a girl at a bar. We liked each other, but it turns into a toxic situation. We were two crazy, drunk punkers trying to outdo each other and be wasted all the time. It was almost a competition of who can be crazier and get drunk and do wild stuff,” he said. Then, “one night our drinking had got out of control.”
Bonsall was arrested in Boulder, Colo., in 2007 after his girlfriend reported that he had assaulted her. He wound up facing charges of second-degree assault and false imprisonment.
In a 911 call played on the episode, Bonsall’s then-girlfriend told the dispatcher, “My boyfriend won’t let me leave the house.” She then claimed Bonsall “poured whiskey in my eyes while I was asleep.” Bonsall could be heard in the background claiming she cut his face with a knife, which she denied.

Bonsall’s own recollection is “super blurry, but I remember holding arms, grabbing a phone. I did one of the worst things you could do, I tried to block the door. I was like, ‘I love you, don’t do this.’ At that point, you think you’re doing something to defuse it, but you’re blocking the door.”
Boulder County Jail
The Family Ties star evaded police for more than a year following the arrest, but was eventually arrested a second time in 2009 after physically assaulting a friend. After testing positive for marijuana while in custody and pleading guilty to the original felony menacing and third-degree assault charges, Bonsall was sentenced to two years of probation.
Bonsall says he “absolutely did not” pour whiskey in his then-girlfriend’s eyes, but did confirm they “both went to rehab and stayed sober six months. At that point, we realized we weren’t good for each other and broke up.”
Bonsall acted in a string of made-for-TV movies following his stint on Family Ties. He then starred in two popular theatrical features: Father Hood, with Patrick Swayze, and the Disney original Blank Check. He revealed on Hollywood Demons that he has since gotten sober, shares a child with wife Courtney Tuck, and is a current member of the band Sunset Silhouette.
“Child Stars Gone Violent,” the second episode of Investigation Discovery’s new series Hollywood Demons, premieres Monday, March 31 from 9-11 p.m. ET on ID and streams on Max.
