Full House stars Andrea Barber and Jodie Sweetin want justice for the Tanner girls’ dead mom on the series. In a new “minisode” of their podcast, How Rude, Tanneritos. Sweetin and Barber checked out Reddit to find fans’ most “unpopular opinions” for them to unpack.
One fan view in particular both stars strongly agreed with: The idea that the show should have talked more about Pamela Tanner, mother of D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie (Sweetin), and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen), and wife of Danny (Bob Saget) — who died prior to the events of the series.
Barber, who played family friend Kimmy Gibbler on the beloved sitcom, pointed out, “She’s talked about a little bit in season 1. We see a flashback or not the flashback, but we see the VHS tape.” But, unfortunately for poor Pam, that’s about it, and her onscreen daughter would have liked to see more of her.
“It doesn’t need to be morbid or down,” Sweetin said. “It would [be like] naturally, over time when you can tell stories about somebody that are funny. Like, I would have loved to have heard more stories about Pam with the kids or something she did with Danny, because that’s kind of what you do when someone passes. That’s what you keep them alive with, the stories, and I feel like Pam just really got, sort of… It was like, you’re dead, bye. You know?”

As Sweetin pointed out, though, sitcoms by nature are funny and light, which may have made producers reluctant to bring up the whole dead mom thing.
“I guess you can’t get too dark in a sitcom,” Sweetin said, adding, “but I think maybe as time went on, you could do it differently, and it would no longer be sad.”
“Yeah. It doesn’t have to be sappy with the violins and crying,” Barber agreed. “Like, no. You could just have a casual mention in these later seasons.”
Barber also suggested that they could have at least had more pictures of Pam around the Tanner household. And instead of Stephanie having a random headshot photo of Danny on her bedside table, it could have been one of her and her mom. But alas, Barber said, the character “was kind of erased by season 4.”

“By season 4? By episode 4!” Sweetin joked. “They were like, just wipe her name off. Yeah. Bye.”
Ultimately, Sweetin said she agreed with the fans’ take on the character (or lack thereof). Said Sweetin, “I definitely agree with this one that you should have talked about Pam more. And I think it was probably just fear of having it turn too dark and then seeming disrespectful by then going to a joke.”

Elsewhere in the podcast, Barber and Sweetin also discuss why they agree that Michelle’s character “was a tyrant” thanks in part to Danny’s favoritism for his youngest daughter.
