The early 2000s were a decade rife with disaster movies about how the world would come to an end (or at least very close): The Day After Tomorrow, 2012, Knowing, etc. The 2010s tried to continue the trend, and whilst it worked for a while, disaster movies never really stayed on a true course.
Maybe it was fatigue from audiences at the notion of the world ending, or maybe Marvel movies were more appealing to the larger customer base of cinema goers at the time. Whatever the cause, the trend ended (or at least became a lot less popular), though that didn’t stop studios from making highly entertaining disaster movies. One of those movies, Geostorm, is soon coming to Netflix for streaming, set to arrive on the platform on April 1, via What’s On Netflix.

What is Geostorm About?
Geostorm follows Jake Lawson (Gerard Butler), a satellite designer who helped build a series of climate-controlling satellites called “Dutch Boy” that orbit the Earth. After being removed as commander of Dutch Boy due to unauthorized use, Jake’s brother Max (Jim Sturgess) takes over. Three years go by and a series of non-natural climate-based disasters are discovered to be related to Max’s satellites.
Realizing that someone is using Dutch Boy to create massive catastrophes, Jake works with Max to discover who has infected Dutch Boy with a virus and how to stop the system from continuing to produce increasingly dangerous disasters before they merge into an event known as a “Geostorm.”
A High Stakes Film With Low Stakes Investment
The movie doesn’t quite have the same logic as The Day After Tomorrow, which some critics say sets the standard for disaster films. The film’s returns were less than half of double its production budget and the critical responses were abysmal.
However, that doesn’t stop Geostorm from being a nice thriller film for an evening in. The movie is comfortably placed, its graphical effects are fantastic, and it’s soon going to be on Netflix and perfect for fans of a night in with a film that isn’t too difficult to follow but plenty entertaining.
Geostorm will be available to stream on Netflix on April 1st.
