Plans to construct a glamping pod in Lerwick, featuring a double bed, toilet, and kitchen, have drawn criticism from nearby residents due to its proximity to the Louise Hughson baby memorial garden and Knab cemetery.

The planning application, submitted for Twageos Road, has prompted objections centered on concerns for the memorial’s significance and the area’s character.

Two residents of Gressy Loan submitted a joint letter to the Shetland Islands Council, describing the proposal as “entirely inappropriate” and “highly disrespectful” to families visiting the memorial garden.

The garden, located within the Knab cemetery extension, serves as a place for grieving parents to honor and remember their lost children. Maintained by the Shetland Islands Council, it has become an essential resource for families, with support from Shetland Sands, a local organization aiding bereaved parents.

The residents emphasized that the proposed glamping pod would disrupt the tranquil nature of the area, stating it is “a residential area and not a camping/glamping area.”

They also criticized the application for not adequately illustrating the garden’s proximity and urged council planners to conduct a site visit to fully assess the proposal’s appropriateness. Additionally, concerns were raised about the pod’s minimal setback from their home, calling it “unacceptable.”

Another neighbor also voiced objections, citing potential disturbances from the development. In a letter to the council, she noted the quiet nature of Twageos Road as a key reason for moving to the location.

According to an article published by Shetland News on January 10, she expressed concerns over the possibility of “noise nuisance,” saying, “I can enjoy the peace of my home and garden at all times.”

While some residents oppose the plan, Lerwick Community Council reviewed the proposal and raised no objections.
