One of Dragon Ball‘s greatest strengths as a franchise is its sense of humor. Leaning into the series’ comedic spirit, the free-to-play mobile title, Dragon Balls Legends, whipped up a hilarious gag for April Fools’ Day.
On X (formerly Twitter), Dragon Ball Legends recently showcased footage of an iconic villain who is supposedly being added to the game’s roster on April 1, 2025. The character in question is Mercenary Tao — a comically overpowered assassin who met his match when pitted against Goku during Dragon Ball’s “Commander Red Saga.” While Tao currently exists in the game as an “Extreme” card, the Legends gag trailer features the “Cyborg” version of the character. The full trailer can be viewed below.

Mercenary Tao Returns to Dragon Ball in Official Joke Trailer
Mercenary Tao aka “The world’s most notorious assassin,” is hired by the leader of the Red Ribbon Army to destroy Goku. While Tao is no match for the half-Saiyan child, he showcases several absurd displays of strength when pitted against other humans. One of the most memorable examples is his bout against General Blue, during which he defeated him using only his tongue. As greedy as he is ruthless, Tao typically charges his customers a minimum of 10 billion zeni for his “services.” After his body is destroyed during his final battle with Goku, Tao uses his immense wealth to be rebuilt as a cyborg. While he acts extremely cocky, most of his brawls with the Z fighters are fruitless and humiliating. For instance, Cyborg Tao is knocked out with just one swift punch from Tien Shinhan during the World Martial Arts Tournament.
Initially released in May 2018, Dragon Ball Legends is a card-based action RPG that requires players to collect and assemble different Z fighter teams. In addition to its online PvP mode, players can also experience a never-before-seen narrative starring “Shallot” — a game-original character created by Akira Toriyama. The game’s website describes the story: “With the chaos of the Tournament of Power behind them, life went on for the inhabitants of Universe 7. But their piece was short-lived…fighters from across the ages were soon drawn together for a timeline-splicing battle royale! Goku fought his way past one fierce foe after another, until a mysterious figure appeared before him… a Saiyan boy dressed like none he had ever seen.” As of March 31, 2025, the title features over 400 playable characters. Several of the game’s latest cards are based on new Saiyan forms and characters introduced in Dragon Ball Daima.
