A 28-year-old Harrison Ford thriller film that was incredibly popular in the 1990s is reportedly being rebooted. Sony may be developing a new Air Force One movie.

The scoop comes from industry insider Daniel Richtman’s page, who has reported: “Sony [is] developing a new Air Force One movie. It’s not clear if this is a remake or a sequel.” The original Air Force One movie debuted in 1997, with the political thriller movie directed and co-produced by Wolfgang Petersen, whose other films included Das Boot (1981), In the Line of Fire (1993), and The Perfect Storm (2000). The plot of the film follows the aircraft carrying the President of the United States as it is hijacked by a group of terrorists.

Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Film Sets Exciting Record for the Director

Tyler Perry’s new war drama is a big success on Netflix and it led to a new record.

The original Air Force One starred Harrison Ford as President James Marshall versus Gary Oldman as Egor Korshunov, the terrorist ringleader of the film. Other cast members included Glenn Close, Wendy Crewson, Paul Guilfoyle, William H. Macy, Liesel Matthews and Dean Stockwell. The film was received positively by critics, receiving two Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Film Editing, losing both to James Cameron’s Titanic.

At the box office, Air Force One proved to be a success back in 1997, pulling in an impressive $315.2 million against an $85 million budget. The film became one of the most popular action films of the 1990s, and it became the highest opening weekend for a Harrison Ford film at the time, beating Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In 2008, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull would go on to break the record that Air Force One held for a decade.

Will Air Force One’s Reboot Be a Remake or a Sequel?

It appears that the rumored Air Force One movie is in early development, so it remains to be seen if the upcoming film will be a remake or a sequel to the original film with Harrison Ford. The 1997 film manages to wrap its story up nicely — and it also ends with the titular aircraft crashing into the sea. Air Force One‘s political action plot could still easily be continued, should Sony choose to develop a sequel 28 years later.

New Gremlins and Goonies Movies Are in Development

Warner Bros. is reportedly working on new installments in its Gremlins and Goonies franchises.

As for Ford, reprising his role in a new Air Force One movie also wouldn’t be entirely out of the question, with the actor continuing to play roles in recent years that originated well before he was President James Marshall in Air Force One. Ford’s career-shaping role as Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark began in 1981, and he has stayed with the role throughout the franchise’s history — including in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. He also portrayed the anti-hero detective Rick Deckard in 1982’s Blade Runner, reprising the role 35 years later in its 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

Air Force One is available for purchase on Blu-ray and at all digital streaming retailers.
