Governor’s Island in New York City has expanded its offerings with a glamping experience operated by Collective Retreats, a company known for high-end outdoor accommodations in various locations across the country.

The addition brings luxury camping to the island, complementing its existing amenities such as bike trails, art exhibits, and nightly campfires.

The glamping retreat currently features two types of accommodations: Summit Tents and Journey Tents. Summit Tents, the more upscale option, come with high-end furnishings, including 1,500-thread-count sheets and private bathrooms.

A third option, the Outlook Shelter, is set to launch soon. According to Collective Retreats, these structures are full-service suites with bedrooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.

According to a report by Good Morning America, these re-purposed shipping containers fold out to provide a 180-degree glass-encased bedroom with “optimal views of the harbor right from your bed.”

Glamping on Governor’s Island represents an opportunity for outdoor hospitality professionals to explore urban-based luxury camping as a viable business model.

The location offers a secluded, nature-focused experience while remaining easily accessible from New York City via ferry. As interest in unique and upscale outdoor accommodations grows, properties in non-traditional settings may see increased demand.

Pricing for the experience varies, with rates reportedly exceeding $700 per night, according to The Associated Press.

On-site dining includes the Three Peaks restaurant, which provides a full-service dining experience, as well as several nearby food vendors.

The combination of premium accommodations and curated amenities aligns with the trend of high-end outdoor lodging that caters to affluent travelers seeking nature without sacrificing comfort.

The expansion of luxury camping into urban settings highlights a shift in the industry, where location flexibility and experiential offerings play a growing role in consumer preferences.

Business owners in the outdoor hospitality sector may find opportunities in similar markets, particularly in locations that blend seclusion with accessibility.
