A historic hotel in Caledon, Co Tyrone, is set to undergo a significant transformation, bringing new hospitality opportunities to the area.

The Caledon Arms Hotel, a 200-year-old listed building, will be redeveloped into a restaurant and brewery, with additional features including glamping accommodations and a children’s play area.

The project, which received planning approval from the Mid Ulster District Council, aims to revitalize the vacant property while preserving its historical significance.

According to a report by The Irish News, the redevelopment will include extensive renovations, a new rear entrance to the Main Street building, and on-site residential accommodation for staff.

The planning application was submitted by Ciara Higgins of Cromac Quay, Belfast, on behalf of Dwayne McGlone of Killybrone.

The refurbishment will be led by construction group Errigal, with Belfast-based Consarc handling the design.

Consarc, known for its work on conservation projects such as the Titanic Hotel and the Grand Opera House, emphasized the need for “extensive upgrades and sensitive conservation repairs” to bring the structure up to modern standards.

“The proposal intends to reuse the building for hospitality use in line with its traditional function as an appropriate use for the building to benefit the local community and the economic prospects of the village with increased tourism,” Consarc stated in a report to the planning department.

Originally built in the early 1820s by Dublin architect William Murray, the Caledon Arms Hotel has stood as a historical landmark. The site includes the main house, former outbuildings, and a single-story infill building.

For outdoor hospitality professionals, the project highlights the growing demand for integrated hospitality experiences that blend traditional accommodations with modern attractions.

The addition of glamping pods aligns with the industry’s increasing focus on unique, experience-driven stays, catering to a market that values both history and innovation.

As more business owners look for ways to enhance their offerings, projects like this demonstrate the potential for revitalizing heritage sites while tapping into the lucrative market of experiential travel.
