A new boutique campground and RV resort is set to open May 23 near Sister Bay, Wisconsin, completing a vision more than a decade in the making.
Camp Door RV Resort & Campground, located a few miles east of Sister Bay, will offer 77 campsites and a range of modern amenities aimed at setting it apart from other campgrounds in the region.
Brothers Matt and Chris Hockers are behind the project, which began as a concept developed by their late father, Pat Hockers. The opening date coincides with the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, marking the beginning of the summer travel season. The campground will accommodate RVs and campers.
The property, a former apple orchard, was purchased years ago by Pat Hockers and later planted with pine saplings by the Hockers family. Those trees now tower more than 20 feet tall.
The campground is located on land adjacent to the family’s excavating business in Liberty Grove, which Pat ran for 47 years.
“It was Pat Hockers’ idea to build a campground on that property,” Matt said, as reported by Green Bay Press Gazette. “He was a very generous person, and he loved the allure of sharing his property.”
Pat moved from Green Bay to Door County at age 17 and soon after launched his excavating company.
After returning to the area, Matt and Chris revisited the plan with their father, envisioning a smaller-scale, boutique-style campground with upgraded features. The updated concept received approval from the town board, and construction began in 2021.
Pat passed away on November 9 at age 64 following a heart attack. Matt and Chris, along with their mother Jill, who serves as president of the excavating business, have since continued the work to bring Pat’s vision to life.
“Dad was a very generous person to a lot of people,” Matt said. “We want to carry on with that.”
Camp Door will include 77 campsites, with 30 designated for seasonal use. Matt said about a third of the seasonal sites are already reserved for 2025. While the campground is geared toward RV travelers, several sites have been booked for tent camping.
Each site will feature picnic tables, 50/30/20-amp electrical service, and water and sewer hookups.
Additional amenities include free high-speed Wi-Fi, a climate-controlled shower house with in-floor heating, and a centralized clubhouse offering restrooms, a camp store, and other supplies.
A covered outdoor patio and fire ring will also be available. Matt noted plans to add a bar to the clubhouse later in the summer. “We want to be different,” he said, emphasizing the guest-focused design of the resort.
