Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting on Friday to assess the law and order situation in Delhi, focusing on strengthening security, tackling crime, and improving public services. According to TOI, the meeting, attended by top police and government officials, led to key decisions on issues like illegal immigration, organised crime, traffic management, and women’s safety.

A “Double-Speed” Approach for Delhi

Shah emphasised the need for a “double-speed” approach to ensure security and development in the capital, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision. He reiterated that the “double-engine” government would work tirelessly to improve governance. A special crackdown on organised crime was announced, with a focus on transforming Tihar and Mandoli jails into model prisons. Additionally, a monsoon action plan is being prepared to tackle the city’s seasonal flooding problems.

Strong Stance on Crime and Illegal Immigration

Directing Delhi Police to take a proactive role, Shah ordered a special drive against crimes every three months for the next year, later increasing the frequency to every 1.5 months. He also called for strict action against networks facilitating the entry and stay of Bangladeshi and Rohingya intruders. “Illegal intruders pose a national security threat and must be identified and deported,” he asserted. Shah further instructed police to dismantle interstate gang operations and implement a “top-to-bottom” and “bottom-to-top” approach to eliminate narcotics networks in Delhi.

Public Safety and Better Governance

To improve policing efficiency, poorly performing police stations and sub-divisions will face strict scrutiny. Shah also announced that Delhi Police will no longer require permission to approve construction-related matters. To enhance public engagement, DCP-level officers will hold grievance camps, while new security committees will be established in JJ clusters to ensure women’s and children’s safety.

Addressing Traffic Woes and Waterlogging

Delhi Police was tasked with identifying traffic congestion hotspots and coordinating with the government to resolve them. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) was directed to deploy quick-response teams to address traffic disruptions caused by broken-down buses. Additionally, the meeting focused on expediting the recruitment of additional police personnel to strengthen law enforcement.

Review of 2020 Delhi Riots Cases

The Delhi government was instructed to appoint special prosecutors to fast-track pending cases related to the 2020 Delhi riots. Shah also called for the early notification of new laws and directed Delhi Police to conduct third-party surveys to gauge public satisfaction with police services, including lost and found complaints, police clearance certificates, and traffic management.

A Rare Meeting Signals Stronger Coordination

The meeting, attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Minister Ashish Sood, Police Commissioner, Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, and Intelligence Bureau Director Tapan Deka, was seen as a rare event. TOI noted that such a meeting had not taken place in over a decade due to conflicts between the previous AAP government and the Centre. As per TOI sources, the meeting signified a new era of coordination between the Centre and Delhi’s administration. One of the key takeaways was the decision to hold monthly review meetings to track progress on the discussed issues.
