Gems provide significant stat bonuses to your gear in Diablo 4. The bonuses start off small at first, but once you get better gems slotted into all your gear slots, the numbers will quickly add up. However, crafting better gems is going to take a while, especially if you don’t know where to look.
In order to craft any sort of gem, players will need to find a resource called Gem Fragments. They’re fairly common and often obtained as rewards from activities like events and Whisper bounties in Diablo 4, but since you’ll need tens of thousands of fragments for the lategame, you’ll want to have an efficient source of these materials.

Every season in Diablo 4 introduces at least one new mechanic or activity, but for posterity’s sake, we’ll be focusing on the following, since they’re permanent parts of the game:
- Whisper Caches
- Nightmare Dungeons
- Helltides
- Infernal Hordes
Whisper Caches

If you complete 10 bounties for the Tree of Whispers, you’ll get to pick one of three possible rewards caches once you return to the tree or any of the raven posts near towns. If you’re lucky, you can redeem a cache of materials, which normally include resources for Tempering and Masterworking items in D4 as well as Gem Fragments.
Nightmare Dungeons

NIghtmare Dungeons are typically packed with monsters and elites, and the rewards chest at the end of each run usually has some gem fragments for you to loot. However, it’s best to keeep in mind that Nightmare Dungeons are primarily for farming Obducite. If you want gem fragments, there are better sources out there.
Helltides

Enemies in Helltides tend to drop stacks of gem fragments on death. You can encounter them in larger volumes by doing events, or by slaying enemies until the Threat Meter is full, prompting a large wave of demons and a Hellborne to attack you. Opening any Helltide chest may also reward you with gem fragments, with Tortured Gifts of Mysteries being the best ones to open.
Infernal Hordes

The Infernal Hordes activity is arguably the best way to farm gem fragments. After you beat the boss, you can choose to spend all the Aether you’ve earned during the activity to open the Materials chest instead of the Gold or Gear ones. This usually results in thousands of fragments for each type of gem as well as a ton of Obducite for gear upgrades.
Seasonal Activities

Featured seasonal activities, such as Headhunting in Season 7, tend to reward players with lots of gear and upgrade materials, including gem fragments. For Season of Witchcraft, opening Exposed Roots and defeating Headless Husks can yield tons of items and materials. Roothold Dungeons can also yield the same amount of stuff, if not more.
