Small, relaxing indie games have a charm to them that large AAA productions just can’t replicate. There’s something really soothing about low-poly graphics with non-intrusive gameplay, simple mechanics, and a lot of love that gives it the extra oomph it needs to challenge the big dogs of the gaming industry.
That’s the kind of vibe that A Game About Digging A Hole is going for, and it manages it quite well. It has a relaxing gameplay loop without a lot of bells and whistles that’s satisfying despite lacking any special traits. It thrusts the player into the action without much guidance and basically no tutorial. There’s not much to learn considering the fact that the game is literally just about digging a giant hole, but there are a few things that seem confusing at first glance, such as the large chest present in the player’s garage.

Great Indie Games That Are Immediately Fun
There’s no slow warm-up period for these indie games. Right out of the gates, players are guaranteed to have a good time.
How to Open the Chest in A Game About Digging A Hole
In the game, players have access to a garage where they can recharge their battery, save their game, sell their spoils, and buy upgrades for their equipment. Mysteriously, there is a large chest located in one corner of the room which has two golden locks holding it closed. There aren’t any UI elements surrounding the chest, and players aren’t able to interact with it normally.
However, if players find golden keys during their mining excursions, they can use them on the chest to open it. You’ll need two keys to open the chest, and finding the keys is just a matter of patience and exploration. The hole that the players are digging isn’t incredibly large, so there aren’t a lot of places that the key can hide. Once players get the drill upgrade for their shovel, it becomes even easier to find the keys.
The depth at which the keys spawn is random, but it will usually be below 15 meters. Both keys are located at different depths. When the player gets close to a key, an object finder automatically comes up and lights up depending on how far or close to the direction of the object the player is. There are a few briefcases of money that also trigger the object finder, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t find the key at first. You should only actively look for it after you’ve unlocked the drill upgrade, which makes mining significantly easier.

Rewards for Opening the Chest in A Game About Digging A Hole

After you get both keys, you can make your way to the chest in the garage to open it. On opening, the chest will give the player two things. An upgrade to the dynamite explosion radius, and a teleporter that teleports you back to your house from any location.
The teleporter is only a single-use item and is removed from your inventory after you use it once. You can use it no matter your location, so it’s a good way to return home. But a decently upgraded jetpack will accomplish the same thing in a few more seconds. It’s good to have in case you get lost underground, but even then there isn’t a lot of utility you can get out of a single-use teleporter that can’t be obtained again.
