Let’s give our Saturday Night Live-dubbed internet daddy some grace.
In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly in support of The Last of Us season 2, Pedro Pascal looks back on his appearance on the SNL 50th anniversary special. “My nightmare of karaoke,” Pascal exclaims when thinking back to his “Domingo: Vow Renewal” sketch with Sabrina Carpenter, Marcello Hernández, Bad Bunny, and more. “I was the first record scratch of the night by missing my cues like three times in a row.”
The Mandalorian and Gladiator II star, who’s also Emmy nominated for hosting SNL in 2023, portrayed Ronaldo, one of the brothers of Hernández’s beloved Domingo. In the SNL50 sketch, in which Kelsey (Chloe Fineman) and her husband Matt (Andrew Dismukes) celebrate their vow renewal, Pascal’s Ronaldo emerges on stage next to Carpenter to continue the “Espresso”-themed parody song.
“I remember thinking, ‘F—! I f—ed it up!'” Pascal says of coming in offbeat. “I was really, really upset with myself for missing the cues. I feel like there was a cognitive and auditory failure on my part where I was so nervous I really couldn’t hear what was happening or what the cue was. I guess no matter what kind of singing and how bad or funny it’s supposed to be, I have just sheer terror of having to sing in any kind of capacity.”

The recurring sketch stems from a 2024 sketch from an October SNL episode hosted by Ariana Grande. Hernández’s Domingo made his debut there as part of a bit involving Kelsey and Matt’s wedding celebration, which is upended when the bridesmaids sing a song, set to the tune of Carpenter’s “Espresso,” about how Kelsey cheated on her now-hubby with Domingo on the bachelorette getaway.
We’ve since seen a “Babymoon” sequel sketch with Charli XCX, and now this “Vow Renewal” iteration, which also featured Bad Bunny as Domingo’s “hot brother” Santiago. Hernández’s character became so popular that he made an appearance as Domingo during one of Carpenter’s Los Angeles concerts.

Pascal still considers SNL his “favorite place to be” despite the snag, which he recovered from like a pro. The star also remembers working with Carpenter, whom, he says, “was so game” right before they went on. “She was like, ‘Okay! So I got a note last minute.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah,'” the actor recalls. “She’s like, ‘I’m going to be grinding on you hard.’ And I was like, ‘You do whatever you want.’ And then before I knew it, we were up on stage. It’s kind of like an outer body experience that I can barely recall outside of my f— up.”
Now that The Last of Us is returning for season 2 starting April 13, let’s see if another hosting turn is in the cards. SNL continues this Saturday with host Mikey Madison at 11:30 p.m. ET/8:30 p.m. PT on NBC.
