Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes recently opened up about the potential conclusion of ABC’s longest-running medical drama. Even though she’s no longer the drama’s showrunner, Rhimes has continued to be an integral part of the series as an executive producer.
When asked about her possible plans for the ending of Grey’s Anatomy during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes admitted that she stopped thinking about the show’s conclusion after Season 8. At the moment, she doesn’t have any idea about how the medical drama will end. “I have zero endings for Grey’s now. I mean, literally zero. Until Season 8, I still had endings,” she shared. “And by the way, I felt like I ended the series several times. I was like, ‘This could be the finale, this could be it,’ but it wasn’t. So, after a while, I just started writing those things that I thought would happen at the end into the show, because it wasn’t ending.”

Rhimes also addressed potentially writing the series finale of Grey’s Anatomy when the time comes. “Yeah, I might want to write the series finale, if that ever comes. I keep waiting for it, but no. I might want to write the series finale,” she continued. “I might not. It might be that, by that point, Meg [Marinis] has really earned the right to end the show, so I don’t know. I’m always excited to see what she comes up with. She just pitched me the finale of this season, and I was so excited by it. I was so proud of her. It’s such a good one.”
Grey’s Anatomy was created by Rhimes in 2005. The show began with Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Justin Chambers, Katherine Heigl, and T.R. Knight as its leading characters. Their story started when the five of them were accepted into the surgical residency program of Seattle Grace Hospital. Besides Grey’s Anatomy, Rhimes is also best known for her involvement in multiple popular shows, including Scandal, How to Get Away with Murder, and Bridgerton.
