The latest set in Disney Lorcana, Archazia’s Island, will launch later this March, but the decklists for the two new starter decks have been released. Like previous Lorcana set releases, Archazia’s Island will feature two Starter Decks: Amethyst & Steel and Ruby & Sapphire.

Each deck is pre-built and ready to play right out of the box, coming with a deck of 60 cards, two of which will be foil cards, as well as playing tools like a paper playmat, 10 damage counters, 1 paper lore tracker token, and a set of game rules. These Starter decks are a great way for new players to, as the name would suggest, start playing Lorcana. There is a good variety of cards in each deck that play well and off of each other as the decks are built by the game’s creators.

Archazia’s Island Features New Dual-Ink Cards

These Cards Feature Two Ink-Types

Archazia’s Island also introduces new dual-ink cards that feature two ink-types, and a nifty stylized banner on the card to show the combo. Dual-ink cards can only be used in decks with the matching two ink colors, which opens up new combinations that allow for more powerful effects, showcasing the synergy between types.

These cards will have characteristics from both ink types, so they have new abilities that will play well together and would ordinarily never be on the same card. To add these cards to a deck, the deck itself must be made up of those two matching inks. This new card type adds a breath of fresh air to Lorcana, adding a new level of strategy to the gameplay.

The new Disney Lorcana Gateway opens up the TCG to players new to it and TCGs in general giving an organized, enjoyable way to learn the game.

The Amethyst & Steel starter deck is full of combat and magic. Amethyst cards focus on magical glimmers and effects while the Steel cards have a more combative approach. When combined, there are possibilities for players to create powerful card combinations that can devastate their opponents.

There are a handful of glimmer cards that are “illusions” and players will want to take note of which cards those are, as there is at least one card in the deck that will allow those illusions to return to the player’s hand after they are banished, to be used again. This deck has a good focus on that “circle of life” style of play, encouraging players to attack and sacrifice cards, knowing they have abilities or items waiting in their hand to bring those cards back to the action rather quickly.

More Cards Mean More Possibilities

This Disney Lorcana Expansion Introduces Plenty of New Strategies

One notable card, as alluded to above, is the foil glimmer card, Jafar – Newly Crowned. This card, with an ink cost of 4, and stats of 2 Strength and 4 Willpower may not seem like much to sniff at, but the ability This Is Not Done Yet is worth keeping track of. During an opponent’s turn, whenever one of the player’s Illusion characters is banished, the player may return that card to their hand.

With some heavy defense Illusion cards, players can stack up a good wall of defenders that can be used over and over again. The card Giant Cobra – Ghostly Serpent, another of the dual-ink cards like Jafar – Newly Crowned, is a fantastic card to use. It has a low ink cost of 3, stats of 4 for both Strength and Willpower, but two great abilities. Vanish is a charming little action that immediately banishes the card when an opponent chooses it for an action.

Its ability Mysterious Advantage lets the player discard a card and gain 2 Lore points when this card is played. More on the Lore front, Fa Zhou – War Hero, gives players a chance at 3 extra Lore points with its ability Training Exercises: Whenever one of the player’s characters challenges another character, as long as it’s the second challenge in the turn, the player gains 3 Lore. There are a lot of cards with sneaky abilities that players will want to take special note of and build their strategies around.

Take a look inside Disney Lorcana’s newest expansion with Shimmering Skies Illumineer’s Trove.

The Ruby and Sapphire deck features several cards that play well off each other, especially now with the ink combination cards. Ruby cards offer players a more aggressive style of play while the Sapphire cards add support and a balance to the aggression of the Ruby cards. Whether it’s through items, actions, or glimmer abilities, players will want to find the right combination of cards to form a perfect strategy, boosting stats, returning cards to their hands, or simply gaining more Lore when questing.

There are some notable cards that come in the Ruby & Sapphire starter deck that players will want to take full advantage of. The foil glimmer card Belle – Mechanic Extraordinaire, has a very high cost of 9 ink to play her, but for good reason. She has a stat of 7 for both Strength and Willlpower and she gains 3 Lore points when she goes questing, which players will want to do to use her Repurpose ability that allows the player to put up to 3 item cards from their discard onto the bottom of their deck.

Doing this also grants 1 Lore token for each item card moved this way, meaning with some proper planning, Belle can get the player a ton of Lore points. On the defense and recovery side of things, the Action – Song card, Ever as Before, lets the player remove up to 2 damage from any number of chosen characters when it is sung.

For those attacking-minded players, they’ll want to keep an eye out for two cards. The Item card, Ruby Coil, lets the player give +2 Strength to a chosen player when this card is in play and anytime a card is put into the inkwell during that turn. As for an attacking Glimmer, Lyle Tiberius Rourke – Crystalized Mercenary, lets the player deal 2 damage to each character in play when, during their turn, a card is put into their inkwell. Lyle does have a high ink cost of 8 but grants 3 Lore points when questing and has stats of 6 Strength and 4 Willpower, so he’s a very valuable card.
