A campsite on the Isle of Wight could see a transformation with the introduction of high-end glamping units made from repurposed shipping containers.

A planning application has been submitted to County Hall by Mike and Sean Fursse-Smith, proposing the addition of self-contained accommodations as part of an upgrade to Mill Heights Campsite in Northwood.

The site, currently accommodating up to five caravans or motorhomes and ten tents, has operated as a camping and caravanning destination for 14 years.

If approved, the development would introduce three 40-foot former shipping containers converted into glamping units, each designed to accommodate two guests.

A smaller 20-foot container is also proposed to serve as a reception, office, and storage facility, as reported by Isle of Wight County Press.

In a planning statement, the Andrew White Planning Consultancy, acting as the agent for the applicants, stated that the proposal is intended to create a:

“Well thought out, meticulously researched and carefully presented scheme for an upmarket and high-end glamping holiday offer in a quiet haven which promotes the natural beauty of the rural landscape and will increase consumer choice for holiday accommodation on the Island.”

The proposal also includes plans for a reception area, bike storage, a bin store, parking, and landscaping.

If approved, the site is expected to operate year-round, with a minimum stay requirement of two nights. Each unit would feature an open-plan living and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen, a double bedroom, and a private shower room.

For outdoor hospitality business owners, this project highlights the growing trend of integrating alternative structures like shipping containers into glamping accommodations.

The use of repurposed containers can offer a sustainable and cost-effective solution for operators looking to expand or diversify their offerings while maintaining a modern and minimalist design.

The ability to operate year-round may also provide a steady revenue stream compared to traditional seasonal camping models.

Public consultation on the proposal is open until February 28, with a decision expected by April 29.
