One Piece is not just a long-running anime franchise; it’s a world that continues to evolve. With over 1,000 episodes and over 1,100 chapters in the manga, the series is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling. The adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hats as they search for One Piece and strive to achieve their dreams have captivated fans for over 26 years, and the journey is far from over.

Fans have much to take in, whether they’ve been with the series since 1999 or joined recently with the popular One Piece Live Action from Netflix or during the anime’s hiatus. The significance of the Ponelglyphs in the quest for One Piece, the affiliations of certain characters with pirate crews, or author Eichiro Oda’s intentions behind his creative choices are all details that can be challenging to absorb. But they also make the series so rich and rewarding to experience.

A Devil Fruit’s Name is Known After it’s Eaten

A Mistranslated Rob Lucci Line in Chapter 385: “There Is a Way”

An image of the Gomu-Gomu Devil Fruit from One Piece is superimposed in front of a red background with question marks.

This incorrect theory came from a mistranslation of the statement made by Rob Lucci in Chapter 385. The translation by VIZ Media states, “You learn the name of the fruit when you gain its power.” Lucci says this to Kaku when the other remarks how he and Kalifa’s Devil Fruits, the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Giraffe, and the Awa Awa no Mi, are not in the Devil Fruit Encyclopedia. Lucci’s statement makes the reader believe a Devil Fruit’s identity is given to the reader after eating it. In reality, Lucci means a Devil Fruit can’t be recognized by shape alone and that one can determine which fruit they’ve got after eating it and seeing the power.

Oda confirmed this in SBS volume 45 by stating, “for Kaku and Kalifa, they were talking about how they wouldn’t know until they had finally eaten the fruit.” This is a dangerous misconception, as carrying this belief creates many confusing events. Take Shanks, who knew what the Gomu Gomu no Mi was before Luffy ate it. More importantly, if this was the case, then Luffy would know the actual name of the Gomu Gomu no Mi, the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, when he ate it, and the twist would have fallen flat.

Fans Often Forget That Zoro Was Not The First Mate

Zoro’s Title on the Crew is Never Stated as the First Mate

Each of the Straw Hats has a unique position on the Thousand Sunny. Nami is the navigator, Sanji is the chef, Usopp is the marksman, and Franky is the Carpenter. With Luffy being the Captain, many assume that Zoro is the First Mate as he was the first to join Luffy and is arguably Luffy’s strongest ally, who often takes the role of leader when Luffy isn’t available. The two have a bond that’s so close that Luffy and Zoro have some of the best scenes in One Piece. However, Zoro has never been referred to as the first mate.

Officially, Zoro’s role in the crew is that of a combatant who has only recently been seen as the Senior Officer after his Wano bounty was announced. This misconception comes from many translation errors in English that wrongly attribute Zoro to the title of “first mate.” But the Japanese text doesn’t ever call him that. It is essential to know the difference as many fans believe Zoro is the first mate and, as a result, has a more critical role on the ship that doesn’t extend to fighting and protecting it while the crew explores. Rayleigh was a First Mate, as seen in his introbox, while Zoro is just the No.2 of the crew.

Blackbeard Cannot Transform into Darkness

Blackbeard is One of the Most Important Antagonists of the Series

Blackbeard will be one of the final antagonists Luffy faces in his quest to become King of the Pirates. Fans need to understand how his powerset works, but because of a misconception and his lack of screen time in the series, there’s some confusion about the Yami Yami no Mi. Some believe that Blackbeard’s Yami Yami no Mi doesn’t allow the user to transform into darkness. This comes from the confusion where the Yami Yami no Mi doesn’t make Blackbeard intangible to attack like other Logia.

In reality, this is because of darkness itself. Blackbeard states that the reasoning for this is that darkness is infinite, and gravity is limitless. Because of this, he even draws attacks in and can’t dodge them or be intangible to them and experiences double the pain. While this is a significant drawback, the Yami Yami no Mi is considered the most evil of Devil Fruits. The ability to control and manipulate darkness still makes Blackbeard one of the most powerful pirates. Blackbeard emphasizes this by saying to Ace, “”Your body is fire, right? Zehahaha!!! I am… darkness!!!”

Fans Mistake Dragon as the “Most Wanted Man in the World.”

Dragon’s Title Is Another Mistranslation

A serious and sweating Monkey D. Dragon from One Piece

A popular mistranslation of the title given to Monkey D. Dragon sees him as the Most Wanted Man in the World. As the leader of the Revolutionary Army, the only faction moving to fight against the World Government and the Celestial Dragons, the title isn’t exactly wrong. He’s even known as the “Rebellious Dragon.” Dragon’s powerset is unknown at this time, and fans are desperate for him to do anything to prove this statement. But this statement isn’t entirely accurate, as Dragon isn’t the Most Wanted Man in the World. Because characters like Kaido, Whitebeard, and Roger have bounties, they are far more wanted. In reality, this title isn’t accurate to Dragon and is a mistranslation.

Dragon’s actual title in the original text is better translated to “World’s Worst Criminal.” The difference here is in the text’s connotation as the “Most Wanted Man in the World” implies that Dragon not only has a higher bounty than any other character but also that he’s being constantly hunted by the World Government or Bounty Hunters. As Dragon has stayed in the same place without concern, that’s not the case. Instead, as the “World’s Worst Criminal,” which implies that the World Government regards him with a disdain they wouldn’t consider any other character, it creates a different dynamic.

Low Ratings Caused the One Piece Cover Stories to not be Animated

The Cover Stories Are Still Important for the One Piece Story

This myth states that after the Buggy and Kobi mini-arcs: “Buggy’s Crew Adventure Chronicles” and “Diary of Koby-Meppo,” the ratings were so low on the anime’s side that the rest of the animated short stories were never adapted again. This is also why the 4kids English Dub, which made a mistake so big that fans hope that the live-action series will rectify this, never collected those episodes.

10 One Piece Cover Stories The Anime Should’ve Covered

Many cover stories give insight into some of the most important events that take place throughout the Grand Line.

The cover stories are essential to One Piece’s world-building as they often explain many other characters’ lives post-Straw Hat adventures. Take the “Diary of Koby-Meppo,” which details many of Koby’s training that made him today’s admiral. The cover stories stopped being animated because the anime simply chose not to adapt them, as the cover story arcs had an equal number of ratings as the previous arcs.

Robin Had Darker Skin Before the Time-Skip

The Manga Always Had a Lighter Skin For Robin

Many fans quickly pointed out Robin’s complete change in skin tone from pre-time skip to post-time skip. This misconception spawns from the anime, with Robin in a darker skin tone, and then in the post-time skip, she’s whiter than snow. Many even theorized that Robin’s time in Arabasta tanned her skin tone entirely, and she lightened up during her time with the Straw Hats. While some fans would prefer Robin for a darker skin tone, that was never the case in the manga.

In the manga, Robin has a pale skin tone similar to Luffy’s and the other Straw Hats. Many believe that the switch is to align her more with the manga. This isn’t the case, nor has it ever been confirmed. Other characters, like Usopp and Zorro, also have a much lighter skin tone.

It should be noted that many of the Straw Hats have a canon nationality, according to Oda in SBS Volume 56. This could be why Robin switched skin tone in the anime to align her with a more Russian nationality, but it makes little sense for all the characters. Oda said that if the characters existed in the real world, this would be their home place:

Fans Believe That Black Lightning is Imbued with Supreme King Haki

Supreme King Haki Has a Very Significan Meaning to One Piece Lore

Shanks is asking Admiral Ryokogyu if the new pirate era scares him in the One Piece anime.

Whenever Black Lightning appeared in the series, fans believed this was because someone was using advanced Supreme King Haki. This is a case of correlation rather than causation. While Black Lightning appears when Supreme King Haki is used, it also appears at other times, like when Supreme King users clash even when they aren’t using Haki, like during Luffy and Do Flamingo’s battle. Black Lightning is used more as a battle effect.

This is important because Supreme King Haki carries a symbolic meaning in One Piece and shouldn’t be attributed to characters who don’t have it. This will not only make the Haki special but further define what it means to be a Supreme King. If a character isn’t stated to be a Supreme King power scaling and storytelling should keep SUpreme King users where they are.

The Higher the Bounty the Stronger The One Piece Pirate

Bounty is Not Indicative of Strength in One Piece

Straw Hat Bounties Collected

This idea spawns from the idea that a higher bounty means that the person with it is powerful, both in-universe and outside of it. While this would make power scaling more manageable if everyone had a power level, that’s not the case. Looking at the bounties of the Straw Hats would prove as such. Characters like Nico Robin and Usopp have high bounties, and while they are dangerous in their own right, none would consider them mighty fighters.

Usopp has a higher bounty than Franky, but Franky is a far stronger character than Usopp. Robin had a high bounty at eight because of her connection to the Ponegylphs. Bounties aren’t indicative of strength; they indicate how dangerous someone is to the environment. The reverse can also be said as Chopper has an extremely low bounty despite being a Straw Hat member; this is because the World Government views him as a pet rather than a competent fighter with medical experience.

Some Fans Believe Oda Stated That He Made a Mistake in Arabasta

How Could Crocodile Be So Strong Yet Lose to Luffy So Early

Crocodile was introduced in the Arabasta arc and was one of the most formidable enemies Luffy faced. As a Warlord of the Sea and a user of a Devil Fruit that turned him into Sand, he seemed impossible to defeat. But Luffy won in the end, and Crocodile was locked up. After a while, a rumor began about how Oda regretted having Crocodile this early because it meant that he was far weaker than he should be, which would ruin his appearance in future arcs. This rumor began with no official citations, which made it false and left no way of knowing Oda’s opinions on Crocodile’s introduction.

The reason for this rumor is that fans have a tough time understanding how Crocodile could be substantial if he lost to Luffy at such an early part in his pirate journey. This sentiment was then placed on Oda to justify their feelings. Consider two things for fans who may feel like Crocodile is weak now. First, Luffy is an abnormally strong fighter who has been training for 10 years straight to be a good fighter; his strength is proven when he beats other opponents later on. Second, Luffy only beat Crocodile because of the exploitable weakness of his Devil Fruit; without it, Luffy may have lost.

Only Three Ponegylphs Are Needed to Find the One Piece

The Crew Needs All Four Poneglyphs to Find the Gol D. Roger’s Treasure

The Roger Pirates discover two Poneglyphs on Fish-Man Island in a One Piece flashback

An idea spawned that only three Ponegylphs are needed to find Laugh Tale and the One Piece. The three Poneglpyhs will present enough coordinates and should be able to gain the final location through math. This is inaccurate and doesn’t regard how difficult it would be to traverse an area in One Piece without direct locations. While the location of Laugh Tale can be drastically narrowed to a small section with three Poneglyphs, and that’s only if they perfectly intersect in an X-shape, traversing to an island in the New World without coordinates can cause its own trouble.

Nika is one of the most critical gods in One Piece. Here’s everything that’s been revealed and the inspirations that have gone into his creation.

This also does not account for whether a line segment drawn using only three coordinates is the length of the New World itself. Remember, the New World is said to be such a challenge that only Gol D. Roger sailed it in its entirety, and not even any of the Emperors sailed it in full. The New World defines the laws of physics, and sailing without a distinct destination would screw up the Log Poses that navigators use to get to a specific place. Because of the troubles of the New World, having the four Poneglyphs is required, and Luffy needs to collect them all. In his possession are three of the four Poneglphys, with the fourth one being a complete mystery of where to find it.
