James Gunn’s Superman is heading to theaters this summer, several months into the second presidential term of Donald Trump. Though the film is arriving when there’s a lot of political discourse in America, Gunn feels that it’s a good time for his Superman film to be released.

Per Variety, Gunn was asked about what made his version of Superman “right for the current cultural moment.” Gunn clarified that his Man of Steel, played by David Corenswet in the upcoming film, isn’t part of the “cultural moment,” suggesting there’s nothing in the film that is directly inspired by any recent happenings in U.S. politics. He went on to explain what it is that Superman stands for, noting how his code is something that’s never changed over the years.

Krypto the Superdog, Superman’s trusty pet, has appeared in Superman comics and TV shows and will be in the upcoming James Gunn Superman film.

“In some ways, I would say it’s the right Superman because I don’t think he’s a part of the cultural moment,” Gunn said. “He’s a character that stands for something that is solid, for basic human morals, basic human integrity, the basic belief in protecting others the weak and being good to people and being honest. He stands for what I think of as the rules that don’t change.”

Gunn was also asked by a reporter how he felt about diversity, equity, and inclusion, given current events. He shared how he doesn’t pay much attention to the news, or even his social media, as much as he used to, implying he’s not completely up to date on everything else that’s been happening in the world. Gunn explained how he’s been so busy with DC Studios projects that he was not thinking about any kind of political messaging when crafting Superman and other stories. Instead, Gunn said he’s been focusing on making the best possible films from a creative standpoint.

Superman is a fan-favorite superhero famous for saving the day, but there are certain X-Men characters he would not stand a chance against in a fight.

“I know what you’re saying,” Gunn explained. “I understand your words, but I’ve been off working on stories for three years, and I just try to tell the best stories I possibly can, and that’s all I care about.”

He added, “We’re just off trying to make the best movies we can in the best way we can. No matter who is telling me who I’m supposed to put in my movie, for whatever reason, I don’t give a shit. I was always about creating the best story possible with the best characters possible. It was that way, you know, five years ago, and it’s that way today.”
