Jason Momoa has been ready to hang up Aquaman’s tights for Lobo‘s leather jacket since 2022. James Gunn recently shared how the actor pitched himself as Lobo the very morning he was announced as co-CEO of DC Studios.

In a post on Instagram, Gunn shared a screenshot of the text he received from Momoa on the morning Warner Bros. announced that he would be co-heading DC Studios. “fucking LOBO,” Momoa wrote. Gunn did not leave the actor on read, responding with, “Dude I’ve said you should be Lobo for years, no lie.” Gunn expanded on the text exchange in the post’s caption, which read: “On the anniversary of Lobo, I can’t help but think of a text I received from [Jason Momoa] on the morning it was announced Peter & I were the heads of DC Studios — the day Jason & I first discussed him joining the DCU as Lobo. I’ve loved watching Jason bring him to life & can’t wait to share that with all of you.”

Jason Momoa’s Lobo Meets Milly Alcock’s Supergirl in DCU Fan Art

Davi Alves shares a piece of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow fan art featuring ‘Supergirl vs Lobo.’

Momoa was cast as Lobo in December 2024, with the actor set to make his debut as his favorite comic book character in 2026’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Momoa is an avowed fan of Lobo, having shared repeatedly in past interviews that he has collected comics featuring the character his whole life. Fans have also been on board with Momoa as Lobo for years now, with many noting how similar the actor looks in real life to the DC bounty hunter (likely a result of both having long hair and similar builds).

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will serve as Lobo’s second live-action appearance after Emmett J. Scanlan played the interstellar mercenary from the utopian planet of Czarnia in the short-lived DC series Krypton. Based on Gunn’s Instagram caption, Momoa has already filmed some (if not all) of his scenes as the alien bounty hunter who was created by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen and first appeared in DC Comics’ Omega Men #3 in 1983. Filming on Supergirl began in January 2025, with Gunn sharing late last month that they were “midway through production” and that so far it had “been an extraordinary experience.”

One beloved action star says he keeps getting fancast as the DCU’s new Batman. Could a casting announcement be coming for the Caped Crusader?

Where Could Lobo Appear Next in the DCU?

Momoa is not expected to have a large role as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. The character does not even appear in the movie’s source material, which is the comic book miniseries of the same name by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. Some fans are hoping that DC will greenlight a Lobo solo movie following Supergirl, although nothing has been announced yet. However, Deadpool 2 director David Leitch has expressed interest in helming such a project. The filmmaker revealed in January 2025 that he was “in” to direct Momoa in a Lobo movie, stating in the comments of one of the actor’s Instagram posts, “It’s a story we were born to tell. This character is all you.”

Milly Alcock headlines Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow as the title character Kara Zor-El/Supergirl. The DCU movie is scheduled to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
