The DC comics have spawned so many great stories and characters, and some of them got the chance to be adapted on the big and small screen. Zack Snyder was among the first filmmakers to tackle several projects in the DC Extended Universe but, as his time with the studio was done, James Gunn will take over the characters in the upcoming DC Universe.

The conversation about whose universe was better is inevitable, as Snyder has a series of devoted fans set to praise him, while Gunn has yet to impress since he’s at the beginning of his long journey. However, over the years, the two filmmakers have often praised each other’s work. Now, Gunn has proven the two are close in real life, as well, with a photo on Threads that’s going viral on social media.

‘Don’t Count Me Out’: Dave Bautista Told James Gunn He Wants to Join the DCU

Former MCU star Dave Bautista is ready to follow his Guardians of the Galaxy writer/director James Gunn over to DC Studios.

In a photo posted on Feb. 20 on his account, Gunn posed with his arm around Snyder. “Always a pleasure catching up with my friend Zack Snyder, consummate filmmaker (and a doubly consummate storyteller!)” the caption reads.

In the comments, fans were divided between praising the DCU x DCEU crossover between the two filmmakers and asking Gunn not to bring Snyder back to the DCU. “Is this a crossover episode?” one asked. Different people asked Gunn to bring Snyder in for The Authority. While the photo received mixed comments from Gunn’s fans, it also proves the two filmmakers continue to be on good terms.

‘I’m Cheering Him On’: Comic Book Legend Todd McFarlane Shares Excitement Over James Gunn’s DCU (Exclusive)

James Gunn’s reboot of the DC Universe has many fans excited, including Todd McFarlane.

Over the years, Gunn and Snyder showed support for each other. In December 2024, Gunn revealed he consulted with the Man of Steel director over Superman’s trunks. “And it was coming together, but it had the red trunks, it had the whole thing,” Gunn told Screen Brief. “And we really went back and forth a lot about the red trunks. I even talked to Zack Snyder about it. He said, ‘I tried like a billion versions with the trunks and just never got there.’ And I said, ‘I see how that’s the case.’

Snyder also showed his support for the new DCU. Talking to CBR’s Kevin Polowy to promote Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the filmmaker shared, “You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited […] I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”

Gunn replied to Snyder’s DCU support, noting, “I didn’t but I knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process.”

What Is Next for James Gunn and Zack Snyder?

James Gunn, who is the co-CEO of DC Studios alongside Peter Safran, has been very involved in the upcoming DCU, which will kick off with the first phase called Chapter One – Gods and Monsters. The first film in the franchise is Superman, which premieres this summer, which Gunn wrote and directed.

As for Snyder, he has many projects on the way, as well. Following the lukewarm reception to his Rebel Moon films, the franchise’s future is still uncertain. However, he is set to continue the Army of the Dead universe, with the upcoming sequel Planet of the Dead, and the TV show Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas.
