Jeff Baena and Aubrey Plaza had separated before the filmmaker’s death.

Two months after the Joshy director’s death from suicide in January, the County of Los Angeles Department of Medical Examiner released an autopsy report for Baena, which has been reviewed by Entertainment Weekly. The report provided context about the Joshy director’s final days, noting that he had been separated from Plaza since she moved to New York in September.

Witness statements from the report also detailed that Baena made “concerning remarks” that prompted a welfare check in October, and that the director had been “attending therapy since that event.” The couple last communicated just hours before Baena was found dead by his dog walker in the filmmaker’s Los Angeles home.

Baena, who co-wrote 2004’s I Heart Huckabees, and Parks and Recreation star Plaza began dating in 2011, and collaborated on numerous projects during their careers. The filmmaker made his directorial debut, Life After Beth, in 2014, with Plaza playing the titular undead girlfriend. Plaza later appeared in Baena’s 2016 film Joshy in a supporting role, and led his 2017 comedy The Little Hours.

Baena created the experimental dramedy series Cinema Toast for Showtime in 2021, which featured directorial work from Plaza. His final film, 2022’s Spin Me Round, is a dark comedy he wrote with his Horse Girl collaborator Alison Brie, who also starred in both films. Plaza played a supporting role in Spin Me Round, which also reunited Baena with Molly Shannon (Life After Beth), Debby Ryan (Horse Girl), Fred Armisen (The Little Hours), and Alessandro Nivola (Cinema Toast).

Plaza shared a statement with Entertainment Weekly shortly after Baena’s death, writing, “This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.”

The actress later paid subtle tribute to her late husband during her brief appearance at SNL50: The Anniversary Special, wearing a tie-dye shirt as she introduced Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. Plaza had previously explained that she and Baena “got really into tie-dyeing during the quarantine,” and ultimately got married “on a whim” wearing “tie-dye pajamas that he had made for us.”
