Summary

  • It’s been 35 years since there was a live-action Gremlins movie but Warner Bros. is said to be exploring a return of the franchise.
  • Actor Jenna Ortega hopes for a live-action sequel and expressed interest in working on the movie.
  • The return of Gremlins 3 could spark a franchise revival.

For Gremlins fans, it’s been decades since they got to see the monsters in live-action on the silver screen. However, if people are really looking to scratch that itch, they can boot up Max and watch the animated series Gremlins: The Wild Batch. However, count Jenna Ortega among those who wants to see another live-action film in the franchise.

Warner Bros. is reportedly exploring a new movie from original Gremlins writer Chris Columbus, though the updates and news about it have been few and far between. In fact, it’s been quite a while since the movie, which was supposed to focus on the Mogwai hasn’t offered much new in quite a while. And it’s been decades since Gremlins 2: The New Batch hit theaters in 1990.

Jenna Ortega Would Love A Return Of Gremlins Movies

Appearing on the red carpet for SXSW debut of Death of a Unicorn Jenna Ortega answered a number of short questions. Including what other mythical creature she’d love to see back on big screen. At first she couldn’t quite decide what sort of mythical creature would be something she’d be all that interested in seeing or working on. Then the interviewer said they’d love to see Thumbelina and that seemed to spark something in Ortega.

“Ya know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins,” Ortega answered with a smile. Then when the IMDB interviewer asked if another Gremlins movie was coming, Ortega first said “would love,” and then said “we should.” The actress then asked whether a new live-action move would be Gremlins 3 or Gremlins 4, before looking directly at the camera and saying “call me.”

“Ya know what I used to love as a kid? Gremlins,”

Should another live-action Gremlins movie hit the silver screen, it would in fact be Gremlins 3 and while there has long been a love for the lizard-like creatures that transform from fuzzy cute teddy-bear animals when they eat after midnight, there hasn’t been enough of a push to get such a project off the ground. One has to think that in this day and age, if a Gremlins 3 did happen, it would spark a real return of the franchise and spawn sequels so quickly it wou would be like someone splashed some water on the mischievous monsters.

For now, Jenna Ortega is busy focusing on other franchises such as the upcoming second season of Wednesday that will include many of the same characters from Season 1 as well as some big name additions including Lady Gaga. While there isn’t an official release date for the Netflix original, it is expected to hit the streamer sometime in 2025, most likely in the fall much as Season 1 did. In the meantime, Gremlins fans can sit back and enjoy more of the animated series’ content as the next installment of Gremlins: The Wild Batch is set to hit Max on April 10. It is thought that this animated series is being used as a way to soften the ground for a full return to the franchise and another movie at some point.
