Dexter is getting another sequel series, and several familiar characters from the original series will be joining Michael C. Hall in the new show. However, fans shouldn’t count on seeing Jennifer Carpenter making her return as Dexter’s late sister, Debra Morgan.
After Carpenter’s Deb was killed off in the original Dexter, she returned in the show’s first sequel series, Dexter: New Blood, when her brother continued to have visions of her as his moral guide. That left the door open for a way to bring Carpenter back for Resurrection as well, even with her character deceased. However, per People, Carpenter has suggested that her run playing Deb in the Dexter universe has come to an end. While she feels like she’s “completed that box” personally, she also wished the Resurrection team well, happy that the franchise continues to live on.

“I am pretty focused where I am, and I feel like I’ve completed that box. I’m proud of it,” said Carpenter at the premiere for 1923 Season 2. “I hope that they’re having a wonderful time. And I’m so happy for the fans to have more to chew on.”

On how she’s now playing a police officer in 1923, as she did in Dexter, Carpenter added, “I don’t know why I get pulled in that direction, but it’s interesting. But I feel like if my career is going to go in that direction, I should probably fill this space in.”

After 4 Years, It’s Time for Fans to Admit Dexter: New Blood Wasn’t a Bad Show
The Dexter franchise has a complicated relationship with its fans, but Dexter: New Blood is a lot better than fans give it credit for.
It was previously reported that James Remar would be returning as Harry Morgan, the father of Dexter and Debra, in Resurrection. This might mean that Harry will be back as Dexter’s moral guide, explaining why the visions of Deb aren’t happening anymore. Jack Alcott is also returning as Harrison Morgan, Dexter’s son as seen in New Blood. Dexter star David Zayas will also be back on board as Angel Batista. Franchise newcomers include Uma Thurman and Peter Dinklage.
There Are Multiple Dexter Spinoffs
The series is one of multiple offshoots that will keep the Dexter franchise ongoing. Recently, the prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, had a successful debut, even with different actors taking on the roles of established characters. Patrick Gibson plays the younger Dexter, though Michael C. Hall serves as the narrator and the voice of the older Dexter. Molly Brown plays a younger version of Jennifer Carpenter’s Debra in the show. Meanwhile, there are also plans moving forward for another prequel series that will focus on the Trinity Killer, the serial killer featured in the original show played by John Lithgow.
A premiere date has not yet been set for Dexter: Resurrection.
