Jennifer Lopez has announced that Edward James Olmos, who played the father of her character, Selena Quintanilla-Perez, in the 1997 movie about the late singer, will reunite with her on the big screen.

“From Selena to now, this journey has come full circle,” Lopez teased on social media. “We’re thrilled to welcome the incredible Edward James Olmos to Office Romance!”

Released in 1997, Selena featured Lopez as the Grammy-winning Tejano singer who broke into mainstream radio posthumously. The “I Could Fall in Love” singer was close with her father and manager, Abraham Quintanilla, whom Olmos portrayed.

Selena was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club, on March 31, 1995, when the singer was 23. Lopez’s announcement about her onscreen reunion with Almos comes on the same day that Selena’s killer was denied parole, almost 30 years to the day after Saldívar shot the singer.

In 1998, Lopez was nominated for a Golden Globe in the category of Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical for her work.

Actress Betty Gilpin (Glow) joined the new movie, Deadline reported in February, which had already been set to costar Ted Lasso‘s Brett Goldstein. Lopez and Benny Medina will produce the film for Netflix, while Goldstein is co-writing. Office Romance began production this month, according to the outlet.

Lopez collaborating with Olmos again is significant because Selena was such an important film in her career. It was a hit and the former In Living Color dancer’s breakout role. By 1998, the actress appeared alongside George Clooney in the heist movie Out of Sight, and she decided to make her debut album, On the 6. She ended up becoming the first woman to simultaneously have a No. 1 album and film, when her 2001 romantic comedy The Wedding Planner came out at the same time.

She’s noted that Selena means a lot to her personally as well. Lopez paid tribute to the late star in 2022, on the movie’s 25th anniversary.

“Today we celebrate and honor Selena’s legacy and music,” Lopez said. “This movie means so much to me … Selena and her family mean so much to me, and I was so lucky to be chosen to play her. I’ll never forget this time in my life and it’s an honor as an artist to have been part of the magic that is this movie.”
