In 2023, the action thriller Mercy was pummeled by critics, getting slapped with a rare and unwanted Rotten Tomatoes score of 0%. However, the film is getting another chance with Netflix subscribers two years after its release.
Per FlixPatrol, Mercy is currently ranked at No. 7 on Netflix’s Top 10 chart for feature films, globally. The film was not a big success upon its release in theaters on May 12, 2023. Its reception was especially harsh, given the 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and its audience score is only good by direct comparison, as it’s also rather low at 17%. The movie was acknowledged at the 44th Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies), when Jon Voight “won” the award for Worst Actor.

The new Netflix series has achieved an impressive milestone in only five weeks despite its poor reviews.
Mercy might not be a critical darling, but something about the film is drawing in viewers on Netflix, giving Mercy some new time to shine. Directed by Tony Dean Smith and written by Alex Wright, the movie features Leah Gibson in the lead role. Gibson is known in part for her role as Inez Green in the Marvel series Jessica Jones, and she also played The Whisper in the Arrowverse’s Batwoman series. She takes center stage in Mercy, playing a casualty surgeon at Mercy Hospital who’s protecting her patient when the Irish mob takes over the facility.
Jon Voight Garnered a Razzie for Mercy
Voight plays one member of the Irish gang, though there was clearly some criticism regarding his role. The film also stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Mission: Impossible III), Sebastien Roberts (Northern Rescue), and Bradley Stryker (Let Him Go). Charles Cooper produced the film.

Tyler Perry’s New Netflix Film Sets Exciting Record for the Director
Tyler Perry’s new war drama is a big success on Netflix and it led to a new record.
The official synopsis for Mercy reads, “Leah Gibson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Academy Award Winner Jon Voight star in this action-packed thriller. An ex-military doctor finds herself in a deadly battle for survival when the Irish mafia seize control of the hospital at which she works. When her son is taken hostage, she is forced to rely upon her battle-hardened past and lethal skills after realizing there’s no one left to save the day but her.”
“It was really exciting,” Gibson said about her role in the film, per fabTV. “I didn’t have a lot of time between getting the role and going to camera, so, it was a lot of focus on physicalization. This is the first action film that I’ve done, and there was a lot of preparation for that, physically, which I really enjoyed.”
When asked if she was doing any of her own stunts for Mercy, Gibson added, “I did all of my own stunts, except for a very important one. My girlfriend… did like the really hard stuff for me. The rest of it, she helped me prepare.”
Mercy is streaming on Netflix.
