Joey Lawrence, Matthew Lawrence, and Andrew Lawrence rose to fame using a fake last name — and now, they say they regret it.
During a panel at 90s Con in Hartford on Friday, the brothers Lawrence — whose real last name is Mignogna — reflected on sacrificing their family name to get ahead in Hollywood.
“[Lawrence] was my middle name,” Joey Lawrence said. “So I was named after our dad, and our grandfather on our dad’s side. And in the early ’80s, it was like, ‘No one can pronounce Mignogna. That’s not a name people will say.'”
The Blossom star added that he probably wouldn’t have to change his name if he were starting out now. “Today, things like that are celebrated,” he said. “In the ’80s, it was like, ‘We’re going to need to water this down. There are silent Gs.’ Because you spell our last name [Mignogna] like filet mignon.’ So they were like, ‘Let’s call him Joey Lawrence.’ So that’s just what they did, and with these guys it just made sense.”
Matthew Lawrence suggested that the trio’s parents understood that stage names would grant the brothers a degree of anonymity, too. “I also think my parents, and wisely so, [knew] there was an insulation factor, where, before the internet, you could hide behind that at, you know, at school,” the Mrs. Doubtfire actor said. “Some people might check in old-school ways, but it would be very, very hard to find us. That was a great thing.”
After the panel’s moderator asked if the brothers wish they’d kept Mignogna, all three Lawrences confirmed they prefer their real surname. “It would have made it easier,” Andrew Lawrence said. “It’s really a pain in the butt, honestly, having two names. You have to prove you’re both people.”

Matthew added that his double-naming has caused him trouble. “Now I’m just stuck with two different names and I can’t travel internationally,” he said. “For a while there, the government only recognized me as Matt Lawrence because I paid taxes from the time I was a toddler to 18 as Matt Lawrence. But really, my name is Matthew William Mignogna. So when I grew up and used my real name on my passport, there was absolutely no correlation. I didn’t exist.”
Later in the panel, Joey explained why his siblings are his favorite costars on set. “We always said we’d love to do a Hangover movie, and like the three of us would be so much fun to do something like that,” he said. “They’ve been the best to work with because … you don’t have to worry, you know? If you’re having a bad day, you’re having a good day — there’s such consistency.”

“There’s such a chemistry and camaraderie and forgiveness, patience,” he said. “No ego. All that stuff is pretty great.”
