John Mulaney now comes from a family of Emmy recipients.

The Everybody’s Live host revealed on Monday’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that David Letterman recently mailed his dad, Chip Mulaney, an “extra Emmy” that he’d found floating around in his house after their My Next Guest special won the award for Outstanding Hosted Nonfiction Series or Special last year. Chip made a guest appearance on his son and Letterman’s special, which saw him join the pair for dinner and share his thoughts on fatherhood.

“My dad got to know Letterman that night,” Mulaney recalled. “He hadn’t really watched his show ever, but he got to know him and they became fast friends.”

Such good friends, host Jimmy Kimmel explained, that Letterman decided to gift his new pal one of the show’s awards. Kimmel then held up a photo of the Emmy that arrived at Chip’s apartment last Friday, as well as a snapshot of the note that came with it.

“Hello Chip, here’s hoping you and all are enjoying all one enjoys out there in Chicago,” Mulaney read. “I found this extra Emmy in a closet and I told the kids, ‘Let’s give it to Chip.’ So, here you go. I hope you love it the way television people love it. And, it’s solid gold!”

The comedian, 42, joked that his dad has been schooling him on proper Emmy etiquette ever since the trophy arrived. “My dad’s like, ‘It’s heavy. And you’ve gotta be careful of the wings because they’re fragile,’” Mulaney said. “I go, ‘Yeah, I have them myself.’”

It’s true — Mulaney has three Emmys to his name: one for Outstanding Music and Lyrics for his contributions to Justin Timberlake’s 2011 SNL monologue, and two for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special for his stand-up specials Kid Gorgeous and Baby J.

Still, he noted that his dad was “really blown away” by Letterman’s kind gesture — so much so that he had a hard time actually keeping it for himself. “He had this great Midwestern reaction to the greatest Midwesterner, David Letterman, ever. He was like, ‘Do I send it back and say no, no I couldn’t possibly?’” Mulaney said. “And I was like, ‘I think it’s a keep it type gift!’ We’re not gonna just ship this back and forth across the country.”

“Will he display it in his office?” Kimmel asked, to which Mulaney replied, “100 percent! He won an Emmy! Sort of! He has an Emmy!”

The last time Mulaney visited Jimmy Kimmel Live, he revealed that his dad Chip was “unfazed” when meeting Letterman for their meal. “I mean, meeting David Letterman, to him, that’s not a big deal at all,” he said back in May. “I think he actually thought, ‘This guy’s excited to meet me.’ … So he wasn’t starstruck, he was totally… but that’s kind of him, he’s not fazed by anything.”
