John Oliver made a surprise appearance on The Daily Show to properly gloat over the United States’ decision to enter its “monarchy era.”

The British Last Week Tonight host, who previously served as a writer and correspondent on The Daily Show for seven years, returned during Monday’s episode to jokingly celebrate the country becoming just like its forefather. Popping up behind host Jon Stewart to loud audience applause, Oliver declared, “The prodigal son appears to have returned.”

Stewart then innocently asked if Oliver planned to “offer America your wisdom and counsel” amid the ongoing Trump administration, to which Oliver promptly replied: “Oh, no, no, no, Jon, I am here to gloat.”

He continued, “America had its little fun, didn’t you? Experimenting with democracy. You fought so hard to get away from us, acting up, throwing all that tea into the harbor — you still owe us for that, by the way.”

Oliver then explained that the British “sat back” and watched as the U.S. declared that it was going to be “different” and not “turn out like your mean old dad.” He added, “We let you spend your wild teen years experimenting with your ridiculous ideas of checks and balances because, deep down, we knew that once you got that nonsense out of your system… you’d be back.”

So, naturally, he was ready to get the party started. “Let me be the first to welcome America to its monarchy era,” Oliver continued. “Congratulations everyone: you can take your place in the pantheon of great empires alongside the British, the Roman, the Klingon, Wakanda, whatever Babar the Elephant was the ruler of, I forget.”

He took immediate offense, however, when Stewart highlighted that things “didn’t end up so great for the British empire” in the end. “First of all, how dare you?” Oliver fired back. “We are technically between empires at the moment, but we’re keeping our castles warm and our crowns bejeweled for the day that we get back onto our feet.”

He also shut down Stewart’s suggestion that the “imperial model” wasn’t a good fit for the United States.

“Have you seen anything American has done over the last 50 years? Because for a country that doesn’t want to be an empire, you’re doing a pretty f—ing good impression of one right now,” he replied. “Invasions, economic exploitations, and now suggesting turning Gaza into a beachfront casino? Even King George would have been like ‘I don’t know guys, feels like the situation is a bit more complicated than that and I’m literally dying of medieval brain disease.’”

A stunned Stewart simply replied, ”We really have become our father.”
