Jon Stewart‘s appearance on Monday night’s episode of The Daily Show left him bloodied after he smashed a coffee mug while ranting about the high price of prescription drugs.

See the moment he cuts his hand on a shattered mug at about 16:58 in the video below.

It happened during his monologue about the high cost Americans pay for prescription drugs, which he began by showing a clip of former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris standing before a crowd, promoting what a news anchor called “the first ever negotiation with pharmaceutical companies” and announcing that they’d come to an agreement to lower the price of 10 drugs.

“But you know what’s so horrible about our system now? And the corruption that lays within it?” Stewart asked. “We’re so f—ing numb to it, we actually tout tiny cracks in that exploitation as victory.”

He grew increasingly angry but also brought out one of his humorous voice effects.

“Ooh, can it be? The companies we subsidize with billions of dollars are allowing us the privilege of negotiating the price of 10 of their drugs,” Stewart said sarcastically. “And 10 is all of them, right? It would be embarrassing if it was a small drop in the bucket and that the American people didn’t expect that we should negotiate for all their f—ing drugs! Because we’ve already paid for ’em with our subsidies!”

He slammed his coffee mug down and the audience seemed to pick up on the fact something had gone wrong, but they cheered. Stewart then looked down at his hand to inspect it, smiled, and jovially said, “I’ll be going to the hospital soon.”

Stewart continued with his report after the slam, holding his injured right hand below the desk, and acted as if nothing had happened. But when he pulled his hand up into view later — about 21:32 in the video — the audience gasped at the blood. Stewart made light of the injury on social media, calling the episode a “bloody good episode” and himself “an idiot.”

In the second part of the show, Stewart spoke with Georgetown Law’s Rupa Bhattacharyya, who is the former Special Master of the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund, about how deep, indiscriminate budget cuts Donald Trump administration advisor Elon Musk and his DOGE foot soldiers are making affect programs like the one she once oversaw.

“It makes me so angry, I want to smash another mug,” Stewart said, lifting his hand into view and looking down at his bloody, bandaged finger. “Oh, wow, this thing’s really coming out. In the commercial break, I had a lightsaber battle with one of the crew members, and that’s how that happened.”
