Julia Stiles would like to submit a contender for the worst movie ever made, and it’s one of her own.
When asked by Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein what her vote for the worst of the worst would be on today’s episode of his Films to be Buried With podcast, Stiles volunteered “one of my own movies actually, that I think was executed very poorly.”
Stiles named the 2000 romcom Down to You, costarring Freddie Prinze Jr. “It was a time when teen romcoms were really popular, and the director wrote the script. He was a first-time director and he was a very, very intelligent, capable guy. The script was very good,” she explained. “And then Harvey Weinstein got his hands on it.”
Down to You is a typical Y2K-era romantic comedy, with a big soundtrack (featuring songs from David Bowie, Yo La Tengo, and Everything But the Girl, among others), bigger cast (supporting stars include Rosario Dawson, Selma Blair, and Henry Winkler), and even bigger feelings.
In one throwaway scene, Prinze Jr.’s character’s mother (Lucie Arnaz) asks Stiles’ character to pick a song from her record collection to play on the air (she’s a radio DJ). Later, in a common room at the college they both attend, Stiles puts on Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” and does a little shimmy around the room and across the pool table.
Stiles claims that “because of the success of Save the Last Dance, or the success of 10 Things I Hate About You, with me dancing on the pool table, he needed to have me dancing in the film.” She characterized the insertion as a “dumb” attempt to “capitalize on this trend.”
“I felt so slimy doing it the whole time,” she admitted. “It was annoying. Because I was like, ‘Well, this is so cheap, and it’s not adding to the story.'”

Save the Last Dance wouldn’t release until the year after Down to You‘s premiere in January 2000. But 10 Things I Hate About You, which provided a major breakthrough for Stiles the year before, does include a memorable shot of the actress rocking out atop a pool table.
Stiles reflected on Down to You‘s place within the course of her career to Entertainment Weekly back in 2019. Though her comments had a more rigorous filter on, she still singled out Weinstein’s notorious penchant for meddling. “The movie changed a lot from the development process to the finished product,” she said, recalling that writer-director “Kris Isacsson had a vision for it that was a lot darker, so I remember thinking it was really mature. Then Harvey Weinstein and Miramax ended up producing it and turned it into a movie that was much more of a commercial, upbeat romantic comedy, for better or worse.”
Stiles starred in several Miramax films at the outset of her career, including Wide Awake, Hamlet, and Carolina. Disney sold the Weinstein brothers’ company in 2010, and the first cascade of allegations crashed down on Harvey in 2017.
Several prominent actresses came forward with accusations against the disgraced mogul, including Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, and Ellen Barkin. Weinstein was found guilty of rape in the third degree and a criminal sex act in the first degree in 2020, and is currently being held at the Rikers Island jail complex.
