Kaslo’s proposed South Beach RV Park is one step closer to resolution as the Village of Kaslo council has deferred its decision on the controversial project to January 28.

During a special meeting on January 13, council directed staff to gather additional information on various concerns.

This included the development’s compliance with the Official Community Plan (OCP), the implications of proposed strata ownership, and water access through a dock.

Mayor Suzan Hewat explained the need for further details to guide the council’s decision.

“A decision regarding the RV park, our proposal conditions of purchase and sale agreement, be deferred until the additional information identified by the council that the 2024 special meeting can be presented,” Hewat told My Nelson Now.

The proposed RV park, spearheaded by QP Developments, would involve rezoning and consolidating multiple parcels of land, including a potential exchange of road allowances owned by the Village.

According to a staff report dating back to August 21, 2024, the development includes commercial recreation zoning, subdivision plans, and measures to address environmental and community concerns.

QP Developments has indicated that public access to the lakeshore would be preserved, with conditions such as covenants to protect riparian zones and prevent encroachments.

The community has been vocal about the proposal, with letters submitted to the council reflecting both support and opposition. Key issues raised include environmental protection, the impact on water resources, and the extent of public access to the area.

The Village’s council has also asked staff to clarify development permit requirements, examine the legality of the proposal under the Lakefront Protection Development Permit Area (DPA), and outline the steps and consequences at each stage of the decision-making process.

The January 13 meeting was open to public participation, both in person and online, allowing community members to voice their opinions within a structured format.

The decision on January 28 is expected to weigh the collected input, environmental considerations, and legal assessments to determine the project’s future.
