Kate Hudson admittedly regrets passing up on the opportunity to pick up 10 (or 15) skirts from Calvin Klein for Meryl Streep‘s Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada.
Before Anne Hathaway landed the lead role in director David Frankel’s 2006 adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s novel about an aspiring journalist, Andy Sachs, working for a ruthless fashion editor (inspired by Weisberger’s time under Vogue‘s Anna Wintour), the filmmaker revealed in Entertainment Weekly’s 15th anniversary oral history reunion interview revealed that the production sought Hudson as one of the many actresses who declined an offer to portray Andy. Now, Hudson has opened up about the decision in a new interview with the Capital Breakfast radio show.
“That was a bad call. It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t,” the Oscar nominee said on the program. “That was one where when I saw it I was like, ugh.”

While Hudson said that “everything happens for a reason,” she said she “should’ve made that work,” seeing as the film went on to score two Oscar nods (one for Streep’s performance, the other for Patricia Field’s costumes) atop earning $327 million at the global box office.
“It’s funny, it’s waves of things that are happening and people shooting at different times. It’s not like you don’t do them because you don’t want to do them,” Hudson continued. “It’s like, oh, you’re doing something else. And it just sucked, you know?”

Elsewhere in EW’s 15th anniversary oral history interview, Frankel revealed that in addition to Hudson, the studio also wanted Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, and Kirsten Dunst to play the role that eventually went to Hathaway, who starred as Andy opposite Streep’s demanding Priestly and the latter’s stuffy assistant, Emily (played by Emily Blunt).
“We started negotiating with Annie to make a deal, and that didn’t go well with the studio.… We offered it to Rachel McAdams three times. The studio was determined to have her, and she was determined not to do it,” Frankel previously told EW.
Hathaway, who passionately sought the role, added: “I patiently waited until it was my turn, and I got the call. It was the easiest yes in the world. I remember the moment I found out I got the part, I just ran screaming through my apartment. I had a bunch of friends over at the time, I just jumped up in the living room and screamed, ‘I’m going to be in The Devil Wears Prada!'”
After Frankel added that the team lightly discussed plans for a sequel after the 2006 film’s initial release, EW reported in July 2024 that most of the original project’s crew and stars were in talks to return for a sequel.
