The greatest Star Wars villain of an entire generation is uncovering the true power behind Darth Vader.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader #1 finds Kylo Ren reeling from the events of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Desperate to kill the parts of himself he believes are holding him back, Kylo makes the long journey to the treacherous world of Mustafar, where he hopes to uncover the secrets behind Darth Vader’s inherent greatness. Not long after setting foot on the planet’s surface, Kylo enters a sprawling Sith temple where he is met by Vaneé, a former servant to Darth Vader who is happy to answer all of this new villain’s questions, especially that of why Vader’s past was so integral to all the power he wielded.

The cragged, molten world of Mustafar was first glimpsed in 2005’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Once a lush, picturesque landscape before cosmic phenomena transformed it into a dangerous, fiery hellscape, Mustafar became a point of interest for the ancient Sith during their search for immortality. Over the centuries, Mustafar has been home to Sith sages, Techno Union miners, and the Black Sun crime syndicate, not to mention the site of some of the most iconic moments in the entire Star Wars franchise. Among these was the fateful battle between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi which left the former disfigured, dismembered, and destined to be reborn as Darth Vader.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader takes place between the events of 2017’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi and 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Per the series’ officialy synopsis from Marvel Comics, the series picks up shortly after Kylo Ren’s ascension to leader of the First Order in the wake of Supreme Leader Snoke’s gruesome demise. Despite this achievement, “recent events including his murder of his father, defeat at the hands of Luke Skywalker, and a surprising connection with the mysterious Rey force him to reckon with what it truly means to be Vader’s heir. As he pursues his dark mission to bring order to the galaxy, Kylo’s madness takes him down a deadly path to discover the truth about his grandfather’s life. From Mustafar to Tattooine, these are the thrilling adventures that enabled Kylo to confront his inner turmoil and meet his destiny!”

Star Wars Is Returning to a Forgotten Era
One of the Star Wars franchise’s most underrated storylines is being revisited, and it’s bringing back a whole crew of fan-favorite villains.
Star Wars: Legacy of Vader writer Charles Soule previously discussed the new series, particularly the ways in which his 2017 run on Darth Vader and his 2019 The Rise of Kylo Ren series influenced the new title. “I think both of those worked so well in part because they were set in parts of the Star Wars timeline full of unanswered questions about characters the audience really loves,” Soule explained. “This new series is not just a combination of those two books, but also a chance to explore an extremely rich section of the timeline that’s almost entirely open: Kylo Ren’s time as Supreme Leader of the First Order between Episode VIII and Episode IX. It’s one of the coolest series I’ve ever worked on, and I am very thrilled that I get to keep following my own path through the Star Wars galaxy with an amazing book like this.”
