Laverock Law Cottages and Glamping in Northumberland has received a Gold Green Tourism award, highlighting its commitment to sustainable operations.

The recognition places the business among a select group in the region that has demonstrated strong environmental and social responsibility practices.

Other recipients of the Gold award include Warksburn Old Church in Hexham and Blackfriars restaurant in Newcastle, while Cragend Farm near Rothbury received a Bronze award.

The Green Tourism certification is part of a broader initiative led by Destination North East England, which is encouraging hospitality and tourism businesses to adopt sustainable practices.

According to the Northumberland Gazette, the organization is offering a fully funded program that provides businesses with a structured framework and resources to work toward official Green Tourism or Green Meetings Certification.

Participating businesses can also benefit from savings of up to £750 in membership costs.

Beyond the environmental advantages, obtaining a Green Tourism certification offers potential business benefits, particularly for those in the outdoor hospitality sector.

Certified businesses can display their achievement through official plaques and list their sustainability credentials on booking platforms such as Booking.com

This can help attract eco-conscious travelers and enhance the property’s appeal in an increasingly sustainability-driven marketplace.

John Marshall, chair of Destination North East England, emphasized the role sustainability will play in the region’s tourism growth.

“We have ambitions to double the value of our visitor economy over the next 10 years, but we can only do this if we all play our part to look after our unique and precious part of the world and the people that live here or come to visit,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of early adopters in leading the industry forward.

“I am delighted to see the first businesses to emerge with certifications from our partnership with Green Tourism and it’s fantastic to have them stand as beacons of sustainability to inspire our wider visitor economy to join us on the regenerative tourism journey,” Marshall added.

For outdoor hospitality businesses, investing in sustainability initiatives such as Green Tourism certification can not only improve operational efficiency but also enhance brand reputation and long-term viability.

With growing consumer demand for responsible travel experiences, businesses that proactively integrate sustainability measures may gain a competitive advantage in the evolving market.
