Matthew McConaughey has booked another role. The actor is set to star in The Rage, an upcoming medieval action movie set during the Peasants’ Revolt.
According to Deadline, McConaughey will play a farmer who becomes the leader of the revolt. Although unconfirmed, Deadline notes that the character description could imply that he’s playing the real-life figure Wat Tyler, who led the uprising before being killed by forces loyal to King Richard. Interestingly enough, when The Rage was first announced back in May 2022 under its original title The Hood, it was Benedict Cumberbatch who was attached as the farmer-turned-leader. However, Cumberbatch is seemingly no longer involved with the project, possibly due to his forthcoming commitments to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Paul Greengrass, who is known for directing three Jason Bourne movies as well as the Tom Hanks-starring Captain Phillips and News of the World, is writing and directing The Rage. The movie takes place during the Peasants’ Revolt, a major uprising that took part across large parts of England in 1381 in response to socio-economic and political tensions and high taxation. What’s Up Next for Matthew McConaughey?
The Rage will actually serve as a reunion for McConaughey and Greengrass, as the former recently headlined the latter’s upcoming drama film, The Lost Bus, based on the 2021 book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson. In the movie, McConaughey stars as bus driver Kevin McCay, who has to navigate a bus carrying children and their teacher to safety through the 2018 Camp Fire in Northern California’s Butte County, the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in the state’s history. Blumhouse is also on board The Lost Bus as a producer. The movie is currently in post-production and will be released on Apple TV+.
