Warning: This article contains spoilers for Survival of the Thickest season 2.

Peppermint is in her bridal era — or at least her Survival of the Thickest alter ego is.

The trans Drag Race alum stars as a character with her same name in Michelle Buteau and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel’s Netflix comedy, which, in the newly released season 2, sees struggling stylist Mavis (Buteau) making sure the trans bride looks (and feels) fabulous every step of the way.

“It sends a message to the general public about who trans women are, can be, and deserve to be,” Peppermint tells Entertainment Weekly of the storyline. “It also sends a message to trans folks that we deserve being loved and that the love and the adoration and the affection that we receive doesn’t need to be secret or shamed or shameful.”

Buteau says the season-long arc leading to Peppermint’s wedding to Harrison (Dan Amboyer) was one of the first things she pitched when the writers room opened for season 2 — part of the comedian’s mission to tell trans stories and show her support on a global scale through her show.

“Trans people deserve dignity, happiness, and community,” Buteau says. “Those things do happen — but they shouldn’t happen in dark spaces. They should happen on every platform. They should happen everywhere.”

The storyline begins with Mavis styling Peppermint for her engagement party, which is a success. But the wedding dress fitting that follows doesn’t feel as elegant as Mavis believes Peppermint deserves, so she stages a redo with their community.

Survival of the Thickest’s celebration continues in bold fashion with Peppermint and Harrison’s wedding of their dreams. The festivities include powerful vows from Peppermint, a cute dance by the newlyweds, and a sensational performance by a group of incredible Ballroom performers (including social media star — and friend of Beyoncé — Honey Balenciaga).

“It shows community,” Peppermint says of the episode, “We’re going to celebrate this tradition and allow her to contribute to the tradition of weddings. We’re going to do that publicly and together. It’s a celebration, like all weddings should be.”

While Peppermints says she’s “pressed” to get married herself, she’s very aware of the power of showing her character’s bridal journey. “Choosing a wedding dress, not being able to see the groom before [the wedding], all of these things are a piece of cultural tradition that is gifted to cis women and cis folks, but trans women are left out of that equation for many reasons,” she explains.

The storyline was conceived prior to Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential election win, but Buteau is proud of the message it sends in 2025. “I couldn’t have known the current administration would be so egregious, especially towards marginalized communities in a way that feels illegal,” she says. “I’m so glad we were able to do this because it’s like, You guys, let’s lead by example. Let’s show people what it should be.”

Adds Peppermint: “In this age, in this country and in this world, barriers to access healthcare, barriers to being able to be seen as a normal in a wedding, barriers to many things legally and socially…. If overcoming barriers builds your character, then trans people have definitely checked that box.”
