The new official website for Final Fantasy IX‘s 25th anniversary site has now gone live, but what should be a cause of celebration is also sparking concern rather than excitement among some fans.
While a Final Fantasy IX anime was first announced to be in production in 2021, no major news of it has come out since, leaving fans in the dark about the intended anime’s fate. The new anniversary website likewise makes no mention of the adaptation, even a vague update about it still being in the works. The animated series, titled Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages’ Legacy, has now largely faded from public discussion after Paris-based production house Cyber Group Studios folded for bankruptcy in late 2024. Founded in 2004 by former Disney executives, including Pierre Sissmann, the animation studio gained recognition for Gigantosaurus and Zou before securing the Final Fantasy IX license from Square Enix.

Announced in June 2021, the project promised a story set a decade after the original game, following six children of fan-favorite black mage Vivi. Cyber Group secured worldwide distribution and merchandising rights and announced the adaptation as an official franchise expansion geared toward all ages.
The initial press release included an official comment from Cyber Group Studios’ Chairman of the Board & CEO Pierre Sissmann, and COO Dominique Boursethat, that read: “We are honored and enthusiastic to participate with our friends of Square Enix in such a great adventure. The opportunity to reach such a large crowd with hundreds of millions of fans around the world as well as a new public of both kids and adults is an immense challenge that we feel extremely proud about. It is a dream come true for our teams in France and in the U.S and we already look forward to creating a great piece of entertainment that respects this fantastic brand.” Reports in October 2024 hinted at four potential buyers for Cyber Group’s assets, with at least two specifically interested in attaining the rights to Final Fantasy IX.
Final Fantasy IX will hit its 25th anniversary on July 7, 2025.
