After several years of living a pirate’s life, Matt Owens is taking a break.

The One Piece co-showrunner announced Friday that he’s stepping down from his role as one of the main creative forces behind Netflix‘s live-action adaptation of the popular manga so that he can prioritize his own well-being.

“The last 6 years working on the live action One Piece have been a life changing journey. A dream come true,” Owens said in a statement posted to Instagram. “It’s also been A LOT. So I’m stepping off the Going Merry to take a break and focus on myself and my mental health.”

Owens went on to thank One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda, manga publisher Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios, Netflix, “and the entire cast and crew for your trust, partnership, and hard work.” As for his next steps, Owens wrote, “For now I’m gonna take a breath, do some therapy, try and rank up in Marvel Rivals, and come back refreshed for the new adventures that await. Thanks to everyone who has supported me. See you real soon!”

The show reposted Owens’ statement and added, “You set us on a course for something truly special,” alongside a saluting emoji.

As for the future of the show, Joe Tracz remains on the series, and Owens’ departure is not expected to affect it.

One Piece, which premiered in 2023, follows the adventures of a boy named Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), who dreams of becoming King of the Pirates. A group of misfits band together to become his crew, which is called the Straw Hat Pirates.

The streamer built massive set for the adventure, including the Straw Hat Pirates’ ship, the Going Merry, and the restaurant ship, the Baratie, which features a fish-head. Owens said in a June 2022 video about the sets, that he was in awe.

“As the biggest One Piece fan, it’s been really exciting seeing some of my favorite places from the manga become a reality,” he said. “Oda’s world is so unique, seeing all of this stuff in person and being able to reach out and touch it has just been such an experience.”

The streamer confirmed last month that second season of One Piece had completed filming, although a premiere date has not been specified.
