Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, and Marianne Faithfull are just a few of the stars who were noticeably absent from the “In Memoriam” segment at the Oscars.
The segment, which began with a poignant tribute to the late Gene Hackman delivered by his Unforgiven costar Morgan Freeman, featured a collection of snapshots and video clips of the celebrities we lost over the last year — including Gena Rowlands, Shelley Duvall, James Earl Jones, Maggie Smith, and Donald Sutherland — displayed onscreen as the ceremony’s orchestra performed Mozart’s “Lacrimosa.”
However, a number of stars were left out of the final cut, including Tony Todd, John Ashton, Bernard Hill, Olivia Hussey, Eleanor Coppola, Alain Delon, Morgan Spurlock, Johnny Wactor, Barbara Rush, Martin Mull, and Tony Lo Bianco. Instead, they were all featured on a much longer “In Memoriam” list published on the Academy’s website.

Trachtenberg, best known for starring on popular teen dramas Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gossip Girl, died Feb. 26 at age 39. A child actress, Trachtenberg grew up onscreen in films like 1996’s Harriet the Spy and 1999’s Inspector Gadget, before going on to star on several films that have gone on to become cultural touchstones over the years, including Eurotrip, Ice Princess, and 17 Again.
Faithfull, a Grammy-nominated artist and actress, died Jan. 30 at 78. Her silver screen roles saw her make history by becoming the first person to ever use the word ‘f—‘ in the 1968 comedy I’ll Never Forget What’s’isname and, a year later, work alongside Alain Delon in the erotic drama, The Girl on a Motorcycle.
And Doherty, who charmed audiences on Charmed and 90210, died July 13 at 53 following a long battle with breast cancer. While she is most commonly known for her television roles, Doherty starred in several films over her decades-long career, including in cult classics like Mallrats and Heathers.
