Parks Canada has engaged the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada to oversee an international design competition to redevelop the 200-block of Banff Avenue, a project in Banff National Park.
For more than 25 years, Parks Canada has pursued a vision for this section of Banff Avenue, securing land and conducting preliminary studies.
In 2022, funding was allocated to initiate detailed site assessments and consultations with indigenous communities, stakeholders, and the public.
Public feedback gathered through meetings, online submissions, and discussions with indigenous groups emphasized the need to modernize facilities, enhance visitor experience, and consider housing options for eligible residents.
The international design competition, set to conclude in March 2026, will adhere to industry standards, bringing professional expertise to the conceptual design process.
Competing designers must incorporate the values and vision shared by engaged communities and stakeholders into their proposals.
Ensuring that public input is integrated into national park management decisions remains a priority for Parks Canada. The agency plans to provide ongoing opportunities for public engagement throughout the redevelopment process.
“The feedback gathered so far through engagement will be used to guide the design competition, as all applicants will need to ensure the values and vision shared by Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and the public are reflected in the conceptual design options that are developed,” Parks Canad said in a press release.
As the project moves forward, Parks Canada will continue sharing updates and encouraging participation from those invested in the future of Banff Avenue.
