One of the former leads of the Call of Duty Zombies mode is forming a new studio called Dark Outlaw Games under the PlayStation umbrella. While not much information has been given about the studio, Jason Blundell says that the studio is currently “staffing up.” This is not Blundell’s first rodeo when it comes to PlayStation-backed studios, having previously been a part of Deviation Games.

That studio shut down almost exactly a year ago without ever getting to ship its first project. After working with Activision for 13 years, Blundell moved on to Deviation Games to develop a new IP that would’ve been exclusive to Sony’s platform. Unfortunately, it was never able to stay off the ground for long enough to finish production on the title.

Dark Outlaw Games is a new, first-party studio by PlayStation, and although there’s no information as to any projects they’re working on, Blundell said in an interview with Jeff Gerstmann that they’ve been working on getting the studio off the ground for some time now. “We’ve been working away in the shadows for a while, when we’ve got something to talk about we’ll step out into the light,” he said.

He also said that he would be serving as the director and studio head, and he expressed that the opportunity to open a first-party studio backed by PlayStation was one that he did not take lightly. “It’s such a privilege to be able to do it with Sony as a new first-party studio,” Blundell said. “Sony doesn’t start up first-party studios all the time, so to have that privilege is humbling.” He doesn’t appear to hold resentment for the closure of Deviation games in 2024 after the studio was acquired by Sony in 2021.

While there is no information as to anything Dark Outlaw is working on yet, Blundell’s experience should lead to some experiences that PlayStation can be proud to host on its platform. That is, as long as they allow the studio to finish their projects.
