Chainsaw Man’s feature film debut is long overdue in more ways than one. Series creator Tatsuki Fujimoto is an infamous cinephile, which is why his manga has a cinematic storytelling style that would translate exceptionally well into a movie. Chainsaw Man was quite literally built for the big screen, but it hasn’t been a fast road to getting there. Fans had to wait an entire year following the end of Chainsaw Man Season 1 to get any information regarding the series’ continuation, and it came in the form of a brief teaser for the Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc. Even at that point, no release date was revealed.

It wouldn’t be until 2 years later in March 2025 when fans finally learned the upcoming Chainsaw Man film would be hitting theaters in Japan in Fall 2025. While the drought of information around Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc was tough for fans to endure, the positive side was that manga readers have always been able to fill in many of the blanks on their own. After all, the original Reze Arc was covered in the manga over five years ago, on September 21, 2019. Since then, Reze has been an inseparable part of the Chainsaw Man fandom’s collective consciousness. It’s fitting, then, that Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will finally make this beloved character a household name six years later, almost exactly to the day.

10 Manga Spoilers We Can’t Wait For in Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc

The Reze Arc is full of amazing twists and turns that Chainsaw Man manga readers will surely be looking forward to seeing come alive in the new movie.

When Does The Chainsaw Man Movie Come Out?

The Chainsaw Man Film Finally Has a Japanese Release Date, But No International Date Confirmed Just Yet

While it’s been a long time coming, the Reze Arc’s release date was finally revealed with a new trailer released on March 23rd, 2025. While the trailer itself didn’t really feature anything that hadn’t been shown in previous trailers before, it did reveal the release date for the film in its final moments. In the trailer, it is revealed that Chainsaw Man – The Movie: The Reze Arc comes to theaters in Japan on September 19th, 2025. Unfortunately, there’s currently no release date for international audiences, but considering how popular the series is overseas, fans in the US shouldn’t have to wait too long.

Interestingly, with the film releasing on September 19, this makes it nearly exactly 6 years to the day that Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is releasing from when the manga first u4 Reze’s character. The first chapter of the Reze Arc, Chainsaw Man Chapter 39, “Tearjerker”, came out on September 21, 2019. Reze was later first introduced in the very next chapter in Chapter 40, “Love, Flower, Chainsaw”, released on September 30. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed whether this was an intentional choice, it seems far too close to be coincidental.

What is the Chainsaw Man Reze Arc Movie About?

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is Expected to Adapt Chainsaw Man Chapters 39 – 53 From the Manga

At the end of Chainsaw Man Season 1’s finale, we saw a brief scene depicting a young girl with purple hair walking through the city. She was heard asking Denji, “which would you rather be? The country mouse or the city mouse?” This purple-haired girl was none other than Reze herself. This was actually a scene pulled directly from the manga, though the dialogue on top of it was pulled from a separate part of the story that doesn’t actually correlate to the imagery.

Denji. Which would you rather be? The country mouse or the city mouse?

5 Things Anime Only Fans Should Know About Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc

The Reze Arc is easily one of the most explosive arcs in the Chainsaw Man manga, and it’s about time anime-only fans got hyped.

The entirety of the Reze Arc is covered in manga volumes 6 and 7, from Chainsaw Man Chapters 39 to 53. At only 14 chapters, this is one of the shortest major arcs in the entire series, making it ideal to cover in a feature film. Being a major story arc in the manga, the Reze arc is canon to the series, making this film will be essential viewing for any fan hoping to get the entire, unabridged story as Tatsuki Fujimoto told it in his original manga. The Reze Arc’s story takes place directly where Season 1 of the anime left off, after Denji and Aki captured Katana Man and took him into Public Safety custody.

This initiates a period of peace of Denji, as he settles into his new – comparatively cushy – life as a Public Safety Devil Hunter. On one of his days off, Denji gets caught in the rain, forcing him to seek shelter in a nearby phone booth. To the same end, a cute young purple-haired girl finds herself getting caught in that same phone booth to avoid the rain as well. This is how Denji meets Reze. The Reze Arc begins as an endearing and heartwarming love story – something Denji desperately needs in his life. Unfortunately, Denji’s identity as Chainsaw Man ends up forcing a wedge in the sense of normalcy he so desperately desires from this relationship.

The Reze Arc Film is Closer to the Manga’s Art Style Than Chainsaw Man Season 1

CGI is Used Far More Sparingly – Likely Due to the Change in Director

The Reze Arc is a beloved section of the manga no fan will want to miss, but its story alone isn’t the only reason to get excited about the adaptation. One of the most exciting things about the Reze Arc trailers for many fans of the manga is how much closer this film’s art style is to that of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s original manga. Especially in the first teaser trailer, there were shots that looked like they were directly pulled from the manga, colored and brought to life. This is a similar methodology to how Tatsuki Fujimoto’s other recent manga-turned-movie adaptation was handled, Look Back.

Look Back was lovingly crafted by Studio Durian with a clear respect and admiration for the source material. The animators clearly sought to not only just adapt the one-shot manga’s story, but also its art as was intended by Fujimoto. Season 1 of the Chainsaw Man anime was extremely faithful to the manga both in terms of its story and art, but it did take some liberties in certain respects with the animation. Mainly, its usage of CGI in some scenes left a select minority of the fandom up in arms about the adaptation, even though it was mostly received to widespread acclaim and popularity.

Chainsaw Man Manga Readers Need to Do Their Best & Not Spoil The Reze Arc For Anime-Only Fans

Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc is known for its plot twis, which is why it’s so important manga readers help avoid spoiling it for anime-only fans.

As well-received as Season 1 of Chainsaw Man was, the Reze Arc film seems to be looking to correct the one minor criticism the series had by sticking even closer to the manga’s art style than ever. This is an exciting proposition, as manga readers will get to see some of the arc’s most iconic panels in full motion, transformed into the purest representation of the cinema that they always were. A big reason for this change in art style is most likely the film’s change in director from Season 1 of the anime. While Chainsaw Man Season 1 was directed by Ryū Nakayama, the Reze Arc film will be directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara.

Nakayama personally decided to leave MAPPA in order to start his own studio, called Andraft, leaving the anime in the hands of Yoshihara. Yoshihara is best known for his work as the director of the Black Clover anime series, though he also directed two episodes of CSM Season 1 as well. Yoshihara was the perfect person to take over the job considering his hands-on experience directing Chainsaw Man, and he has clearly decided to take the series in his own unique direction in Nakayama’s absence.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is led by an excellent and well-seasoned director, but he’s not the only member of the team creating the film fans should be excited about. Pretty much the entire main VA cast from Season 1 is expected to reprise their roles in the film. While an official cast listing has not been released, viewers can expect the main characters like Denji, Makima, Aki and Power to all retain their VAs. Insofar as the newest member of the cast, Reze, is concerned, she has been confirmed to be voiced by Reina Ueda in Japanese, and Alexis Tipton in English.

The Reze Arc Will Be Chainsaw Man’s Mugen Train

Chainsaw Man’s debut film, The Reze Arc, may be one of the biggest anime films ever considering its parallels to Demon Slayer’s record-breaking hit.

Keeping with the overall atmosphere of Chainsaw Man is an utterly unhinged soundtrack by Kensuke Ushio. The music in the trailers alone has already featured an explosion of styles, from soft, piano ballads to thumbing EDM beats. The instrumentation consists of heavy rock guitars, glitchy hip-hop-inspired sampling, and everything in between. It’s an impressive hint at what’s to come, as the amalgamation of genres is a perfect parallel to the rollercoaster of mixed emotions Denji feels throughout the Reze Arc.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will be an exciting turning point in the story that will be essential viewing for any fan of the anime. Judging by its production so far, the film could even end up becoming essential viewing for anyone interested in the medium of anime in general when all is said and done. Chainsaw Man is easily one of the best modern manga stories currently ongoing, and the anime’s first season has barely scratched the surface so far. The Reze Arc promises to blow the lid off the entire industry to show the world what Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga series is really all about.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc comes to theaters in Japan on September 19, 2025.
