Brat pack icon Rob Lowe has admitted to having a deep focus on his adult sons’ romantic entanglements — all in pursuit of helping to raise their little brat packs in the future.

The 61-year-old opened up about his family life in a new interview with AARP, in which he revealed he’s keenly fixated on the love lives of his sons, his Unstable costar John Owen Lowe, 29, and Matthew Lowe, 31.

“I have a probably overly inappropriate interest in my sons’ love lives,” Lowe told AARP. “Because I’m angling for grandkids. It better happen!”

He also reflected on his decision to preserve his family life out of the spotlight earlier in his career, by moving his family (also including wife Sheryl Berkoff, whom he married in 1991) outside of Los Angeles years ago.

“I had a vision of myself coaching Little League, which I did. I coached everything I could. It was one of my favorite things I did as a dad,” Lowe said, savoring his decision to separate Hollywood from familial affairs. “And I didn’t want to look over on the sidelines and have the head of NBC over there, who I’m waiting to hear from, whether they’re going to renew my show for the fifth season.”

Later in his career, though, his professional life has become intertwined with his sons’, as he and John co-starred in two seasons of the aforementioned Netflix comedy Unstable, while Matthew helps him with the financial aspects of the family business.

“So I get to do the creative, entertainment stuff with Johnny, and then I get to do the business part with Matthew,” Lowe said.

Outside of his work with his family, Lowe is also dipping into the well of nostalgia for a potential sequel to his 1985 classic St. Elmo’s Fire. In an interview with Demi Moore at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, the actress told Entertainment Weekly that she met with Sony about continuing the movie’s story in a sequel following the characters later in life — and, as she said at the time, “everyone is pretty much open and on board” to reprise their parts.

Later, Lowe told Kelly Ripa on her Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast that he’s “very much in contact” with Moore because they’re “actively trying to do [the] St. Elmo’s Fire sequel.”
