Robert De Niro recently gave fans an exciting update about one of his most popular movie franchises. The legendary actor will return for Meet the Parents 4.

During an appearance on The View, De Niro responded with a resounding “Yes” when asked if he would be involved in the recently revealed Meet the Parents 4. His answer was followed by a roar of applause from the audience. In December 2024, it was reported that De Niro, Ben Stiller, Teri Polo and Blythe Danner were in early talks to return for a fourth entry in the comedy film series, with John Hamburg set to pen the screenplay.

‘Still Humbled’: Zack Snyder Reflects on His Controversial 4-Hour Justice League Cut

Zack Snyder has a special message for the Snyder Cut fan base.

A release date for Meet the Parents 4 hasn’t been confirmed at this time, nor is a director attached to the project. It also remains to be seen if the rest of the franchise’s main cast, including Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman, Owen Wilson and Thomas McCarthy, will return.

Meet the Parents was released in 2000, with Stiller playing Gaylord “Greg” Focker, a nurse who visits his girlfriend’s parents (De Niro and Danner). Polo stars as Pam Byrnes, Greg’s girlfriend, with Wilson appearing as Kevin Rawley, a wealthy stock investor and Pam’s ex-fiancée. The comedy flick was one of the highest-grossing films of 2000, earning over $330 million during its theatrical run.

It also spawned numerous sequels, a reality television show and a sitcom. Meet the Fockers arrived in 2004 as the second film installment, chronicling Greg and Pam’s quest to introduce their parents to each other as their wedding date draws nearer. The sequel proved to be an even bigger success, earning over $500 million.

Following the financial success of the first two films, De Niro and Stiller received an impressive $20 million payday to reprise their roles in Little Fockers, the third entry in the franchise. The third movie didn’t fare as well as the first two movies, but still made over $310 million. It also received negative reviews from critics and audiences, who panned the plot – which sees the Fockers married for 10 years and with children – as lazy compared to its predecessors.

While on The View, Robert De Niro also talked about a rumor that he was responsible for the awkward lie detector scene that fans loved in the original Meet the Parents. De Niro nodded and gave a chuckle when asked if the rumors were true, saying, “Yes, I got it from somebody I knew who was in the CIA. And I thought, this is very interesting…maybe, you know, this is something we could do.”

When asked if he’s anything like his Meet the Parents character as a father-in-law in real life, De Niro’s answer was simple. “No…no,” he said with a laugh.

Meet the Parents 4 does not have a release date at this time.
