Online reservations for Rocky Mountain National Park’s Wilderness Overnight Backpacking permits will open on Saturday, March 1, at 8 a.m. MST. The permits cover the 2025 summer season and are required for visitors planning overnight trips in the park’s backcountry.

Reservations can be made through the Rocky Mountain National Park page on Recreation.gov. Applicants will need to use the “Check Availability” feature on the Wilderness Permits page, select their desired starting area, indicate their start date, and specify the total number of people in their group.

Permits are available for both small groups (1-7 people) and large groups (8-12 people). Due to high demand, spots often fill quickly, and prospective visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and be prepared to book as soon as reservations open.

Visitors must follow park regulations, including the mandatory use of hard-sided, lockable, commercially manufactured bear-resistant food storage canisters. These must be carried in and out of the park to protect wildlife and preserve the wilderness environment.

Campfires are prohibited throughout Rocky Mountain National Park’s backcountry. This regulation is in place to reduce wildfire risk and protect the park’s natural resources.

The Wilderness Overnight Backpacking program allows visitors to explore Rocky Mountain National Park’s extensive network of backcountry trails, offering a unique opportunity to experience the park’s diverse landscapes and wildlife.

During the summer season, Aspenglen, Glacier Basin, and Timber Creek Campgrounds are open. Camping reservations can be made up to six months in advance through Recreation.gov, the Recreation.gov Mobile App, or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Reservations are not available in person at campgrounds or visitor centers, and some campsites are released on a short-term basis.

For those looking to camp at Longs Peak Campground, the seasonal campground typically opens in early July and closes in early September. Unlike other campgrounds in the park, Longs Peak Campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis and is available for tents only.

Moraine Park Campground also remains closed due to the Moraine Park Campground & Headquarters East Utility Restoration Project. The contractor is working to complete the project, and the campground is expected to reopen this summer.
