Rosamund Pike was new to the magic of moviemaking when she was cast in Die Another Day at only 22, which led to an embarrassing misunderstanding when it came time to film a love scene with costar Pierce Brosnan.

On Monday’s episode of David Tennant Does a Podcast With, Pike recalled “the time when we were doing the love scene, and obviously I discovered things like nipple covers, and all the taping.” It’s standard for actors to wear invisible, adhesive covers while shooting intimate scenes, but it was still new to Pike.

After Pike and Brosnan began filming the scene on a bed “covered in furs,” the Gone Girl actress told host David Tennant, “We have this clinch, and then we separate, and I look at this body tape and the nipple covers and they’re covered in hair. I think, ‘Oh my God, I’m waxing Pierce’s chest.'”

“I was so mortified,” Pike continued. “I thought, ‘Oh my God, he’s so brave, and I’m pulling off his chest hair with every embrace.’ It took a couple of takes to realize it was not him. It was the fake fur of the rugs.”

“I literally thought I was waxing the poor man’s chest,” Pike laughed.

At the the of filming, Brosnan was 49 – nearly 30 years Pike’s senior. The veteran actor drew no undue attention to Pike’s misunderstanding, and she described Brosnan as an “absolute gent” who “couldn’t have been more supportive or kind.”

Pike booked the plum Bond girl role of Miranda Frost Die Another Day at the very outset of her career. It was her first film role, though she’d appeared previously on BBC series adaptations of classic novels by authors like Nancy Mitford and Elizabeth Gaskell. Pike described going from corsets and garters to whacking at Halle Berry with a sword on a falling plane as “a magic carpet of an experience.”

Pike reflected on her turn in the 20th entry in the James Bond franchise to Entertainment Weekly in 2020, admitting that she’d never before even seen a 007 movie, and gushing about her costars.

“Pierce was wonderful to me, [and] it was pretty phenomenal to meet Halle Berry,” she said. “Her stature in the business seemed like she was on another planet, really, from me. It was when she was in her Oscar whirl and she’d just done that amazing performance in Monster’s Ball, and she seemed so glamorous.”
